Rest

It is night
I put on my sleep mask
And can still feel the tears
From this morning
They soaked into the fabric
And now the coolness rests
Against my closed eyelids
As I try to fall asleep

I think to myself
As I lie in my bed
At home
Feeling like an alien
On the empty set of a TV show

What home would look like
But this

Two strangers told me my life
One gave me comfort
And one gave me discomfort that
Led to an epiphany
Thank you, scientists
I can move forward now
With less suffering
Less struggling through quicksand
Less hanging by my fingernails
Off the edge of a cliff

The researcher’s words gave me no comfort
They delivered an earth-shattering deduction
That I was not ready to hear
I fled from the overwhelm
But as I thought about it more
And read about the topic
I realized she was right
And it explained
Everything

The doctor’s words gave me comfort
He explained part of why
I’ve had so much difficulty
And asked me to do things
Not so that others will think well of me
But so I can live out the qualities
That I like about myself

Strangers

Two times this year
Strangers have told me my life
The first,
A perceptive doctor
In a locked unit
The second,
An observant researcher
In a spacious hotel conference room

Wow, great job.
You really showed them.
Are you ever going to move on?
Or are you going to continue
Pretending you’re back there
Instead of here
In the present day
Where things are different now

Has-Been

The United States of America
Is the guy who peaked in high school
(World War II)
And who can’t stop talking about
The time he made the winning touchdown
(Killed hundreds of thousands
Of Japanese civilians)
To win the big game senior year.

Today I went to the doctor
And as I sat staring at the floor
While the nurse wrapped my arm
In the blood pressure cuff
I thought quietly,
“All I can do is
Be here now”

All I Can Do

Ever since I rode a rented bicycle
Through sun-speckled Vienna
Two decades ago
I have wanted to move back there
To the happiest period of my life

Last night, I finally looked up
How to move to Austria
And be near the sparkling Danube
Not sure why it took me this long

Wrestling Champion

Now that I have crossed the river
I do not struggle with god after night falls
As they say Jacob did
My days of wrestling with god are over
I won that match
And now I wrestle
All night long
With my past

Masticating, swallowing and digesting us
So that the great American economy
Continues to fill the bellies of rich white men
And if you don’t stay in your place
You will be spit out

The reason a salad is delicious
Is because each element retains its flavor
Otherwise, it’s just tasteless, endless chewing
And the salad does get consumed
We all do, eventually

The Great American Salad

My country is not a melting pot
It is a salad
With spinach, iceberg lettuce, walnuts,
Cherry tomatoes, dried cherries,
Blue cheese crumbles, dressing
And whatever else came from the fridge
Making its way into this huge salad bowl

Like the times in life
When things are going so well
That you forget that
At any moment
The stone could be thrown
Shattering everything

She cradles the black stone in her hand
Feeling the weight of it
It’s so smooth
She could almost believe it’s soft

Has created its own punishment

The acrid taste of regret

A perfect person

At least not to an audience of humans
They could write about
The juicy sweetness of a mango
The grassy fragrance of spring
And the comforting softness of a kitten

But knowing now
What each unfortunate choice led to
I dream of returning to a marked page
And fighting the ogre this time
