Massive consolidation of entertainment conglomerates has an unexpected downside for them: when one of their subsidiaries capitulates to fascism, it threatens their entire portfolio.

As a Guild, we stand united in opposition to anyone who uses their power and influence to silence the voices of writers, or anyone who speaks in dissent. If free speech applied only to ideas we like, we needn't have bothered to write it into the Constitution. What we have signed on to - painful as it may be at times - is the freeing agreement to disagree. Shame on those in government who forget this founding truth. As for our employers, our words have made you rich. Silencing us impoverishes the whole world. The WA stands with Jimmy Kimmel and his writers.

The thing is, slash shipping's popularity works well because of the support regardless of race. Rectifying racial representation in fanfic relies on the eagerness of POC and non-POC to engage in that inclusivity.

Which is a lot harder to do.

However when it comes to the lack of racial diversity, we don't see such a drastic movement in fanfic to rectify that. POC!reader in self-insert fics and inclusion of OCs are ways fans work towards representation of themselves in fanfic. Yet, it pales in comparison to the full force of yaoi.

While there's annoyance or downright frustration in regard to this information, it's not hard to see how this happens. Western media is still overwhelmingly white and male. There's been plenty of research throughout the years of how male dominated media has led to slash shipping.

The AO3 ship list this year however had a surprising new addition in it's top three. A sapphic ship. Courtesy of the Arcane fandom, a wlw ship broke through the see of gay ships that often take hold. Which only added to the discussion on the overwhelming amount of white male ships represented.
