Radioactive water from Dounreay nuclear site leaked in major breach RADIOACTIVE material was accidentally released at Scotlandโ€™s Dounreay nuclear site in a major environmental breach, The National can reveal ...

"It is a telling sign that we must move away from unstable, harmful, wasteful energy sources like nuclear immediately,...Harmful waste being released into the environment, accidentally or otherwise, has a knock-on effect on our own lives and the world around us."

No surprise - the North Sea continues to erode the coast in front of the Sizewell C site & now appears to be less than 20 metres from the site boundary where the temporary sea defences are being constructed. Sizewell C - a #climatechange casualty, not a solution

Zelenskyy sounds alarm over unprecedented power outage at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant Ukrainian president says Russian shelling is preventing work to restore links to grid and that one of the plantโ€™s diesel generators has failed

"Zelenskyy said: โ€œThis is a threat to everyone. No terrorist in the world has ever dared to do with a nuclear power plant what Russia is doing now. And it is right that the world not remain silent.โ€"

I think this is why they changed the name from Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to National Landscape. It doesn't sound as bad to build on a national landscape as that describes everywhere. AONB is very specific.

13/ Prioritising nuclear raises energy justice concerns in addition to the higher cost of 2.3% of GDP. RE promotes decentralisation, equity, and participation. Nuclear reinforces centralised regimes and burdens future generations with long-term waste management.

9/ Key results show nuclear scenarios lead to 99โ€“115% higher levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) compared to the BPS-ref in 2050 (70.1โ€“75.8 โ‚ฌ/MWh vs. 35.3 โ‚ฌ/MWh). The cost-optimal RE system is dominated by wind power (54%) and solar PV (30%).

5/ SMRs are modelled for both electricity & combined heat and power. SMR technology is not yet commercially available, posing greater financial risks than renewables with continuously declining costs. SMR investment cost consider its growth, learning rate, and economies of scale.

I don't think the best way to solve cybersecurity issues is by building NPPs. Buying inverters with OSS and good cryptography seems cheaper and more effective to me. (Or diversify where you get your inverters.)

Are you suggesting it's a good idea to hide costs by putting government on the hook.

28.09.2025 18:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 18    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 3    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Bottom line: nuclear has been getting away with underestimating costs for decades as far as I can see.

But the most important problem (and you often say yourself): baseload is not really needed anymore. So what is the role of nuclear? Unless you go fully nuclear.

28.09.2025 17:12 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 32    ๐Ÿ” 3    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

This value of diversification... I don't see it tbh. Is that in case there's no longer sun or wind?
Regarding the cost of capital: I think it should actually include predictable cost overruns and hidden subsidies like government taking care of disasters and waste during 10s of thousands of years.

I'm glad that @christianonre.bsky.social increasingly includes nuclear in his analysis, if only to show that adding nuclear is really more expensive than a system running completely (100%) on renewables.
