Their tweets got amplified through retweets, driving this politicization process of #MeToo

#MeToo on Twitter/X didn’t just “go political.” Episodically and asymmetrically politicized, driven by elites.

Here’s what we found:
1️⃣ Partisans were dominant right at the start (late 2017), their overall share trended DOWNWARD over the three-year study
2️⃣ Once partisans started talking, they stayed loud longer
3️⃣ Partisan groups *selectively* jumped in based on the accused person's party affiliation

Who was tweeting? Our user clustering shows:
• Partisans: 47.2% of tweets
• Attentive Publics (General audience/non-aligned): 30.3%
• Anti-Sexual Violence Activists: 5.9%

We tested three ways politics takes over:
1) Crowding out activist voices,
2) Sustained voice, and
3) Selective targeting 2/
