13.03.2025 03:12 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A large neotenic adult california giant salamander underwater at the bottom of a cold stream at night. Its skin is bumpy, perhaps a sign of trematode infection and despite its large size the gills are small as the cold flowing water is well oxygenated.
Night snorkeling in the redwoods to find an old friend. I posted that I was going to go look for this individual last week & I found the same one (I thiiink)! In the same deep pool I saw it in a year ago. A neotenic california giant salamander that never metamorphosed & never left the water. π¦π
