29.10.2023 21:51 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Most software engineers were re-levelled as E5 (Senior engineer) as part of the recent changes. Some got E6 (Staff). Very few got E4 (Engineer 2) and E7 (Principal) was the rarest levels of all. Lots of tenured software engineers left Netflix during the past few months, as the re-levelling project moved ahead. In many cases, the reason for leaving was they were not happy with how they were to be levelled as E5 in the new levelling system, and not the higher level they felt was appropriate.
It was just over a year ago that Netflix introduced levels for software engineers - after 25 years of only having one level: senior software engineer.
Here are details on what happened, and why the company likely made this change: blog.pragmaticengineer.com/netflix-levels/
That looks awful 😞
