DOGE is only a failure if you took their mission in good faith. DOGE destroyed so many government funded projects, gutted agencies of key staff, and illegally obtained large data sets.

Their goal was never efficiency, it was to destroy and steal and they were very successful at doing both.

Yup. Totally fine with editors making decisions on say, split reviews, or requests for additional experiments. Reviewers are advisory, not the final word.

It is interesting when I've had this discussion in 🇨🇦, there is a large contingent who think strict panel ranking is inherently "fair" and anything that deviates from that (other criteria, tiered decisions) is inherently "unfair." It's a good example of the quantitative fallacy.

disputes & this is usually done in good faith. Nobody agrees on every decision but on the whole it's acceptable.

What scares me is having this process led by cronies, antivaxxers, people who disapprove of all animal research, people who don't care about ethics, eugenicists. And that is a real risk.

The NIH decision process has never been "fair" per se. Congress appropriates funding by IC, for one, so some ICe have more money to give out (and therefore give to research deemed less 'impactful" by study sections than other ICs). Is it fair for an addiction grant held by NIDA to be evaluated
