Computer literacy including basic coding concepts will be an increasing part of many careers, so while programming as a career may wax and wane, having some skills will never be a negative.

Physicist, teacher, union local president, CERN Ambassador, QuarkNet Cosmic Ray fellow, guinea pigs, guitar, travel, history, amateur radio, etc. I want to leave the world a better place than I found it.

27.11.2024 15:07 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I have thought about this since we saw our membership and conference attendance dropping in our region, especially among hs teachers. Fewer physics prog's producing teachers? Less AAPT involvement in college departments? More non-physicists teaching? Pref. for NSTA? High membership cost increases?
27.11.2024 15:06 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That's one of the reasons I love teaching regular/honors physics in high school using modeling. They learn all about kinematics and the relationship between the graphs of position, velocity, and acceleration, and then get a giant 'aha!' moment or two in calculus.

AI checker says the use of the word "devoid" magically turned essay into 18% AI written. Changing "devoid" makes it drop to 0%. We're spending time "un-AI-ing" an essay that has no AI.

My friend at UT Austin reports campus lawyers have instructed individuals and departments to scrub public websites of any reference to diversity, equity and inclusion. Her whole job is researching UT's resistance to desegregation. Things are bad, y'all.

Apparently I am either a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, a planetary scientist, or a plain physicist, depending on my mood on a few questions.
21.11.2023 23:42 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Sometimes being a student means slogging through the swamp, up to your neck, and you can't see where you are going or how far away it is. If you're the person on high dry ground with a lantern, you can give them the encouragement, direction, and hope they need.

1. You know when a student comes to you having done the work well, but it's complex and still new so they want to check to be sure? I love when that happens and I can celebrate that moment of validation with them.
