🚨🐭 Breaking: Rare hazel dormouse population discovered in West Sussex woodland

A team of volunteers has found a previously unrecorded population of the endangered hazel dormouse in a woodland near Lindfield, West Sussex.

A small blue tinted mushroom surrounded by brown/yellow grass. Sropharia caerulia .common name Blue Roundhead

A small yellow mushroom amongst grass - Bolbitius vitellinus ; on manured ground with viscid cap - the genus name means 'of cow dung'!

There is always something to see though: We recorded bank voles & a brown hare. We went to see the newly enlarged (and recently filled) pond, and our grey day was brightened by a hunting kestrel and some spectacular fungi! 🍄#fungi #ponds #hares #voles

This Saturday we braved the weather and were out surveying for Harvest Mouse Nests! 12 keen searches turned up to look for the nests at Sun Rising burial ground in Tysoe. Lots of nice long grass but sadly no nests were found this time. #survey #nests #harvestmouse @mammalsociety.bsky.social

@warksmammalgroup.bsky.social weren't the only ones looking for signs of life in the grasslands of the Natural Burial ground at Tysoe today!

We will be going ahead with the #HarvestMouse survey at Tysoe on Saturday. The forecast is light rain so please wear waterproofs. Gloves will also be handy for searching through wet grass! If you are planning on joining us and haven't signed up via the Eventbrite link please do.

A recent harvest mouse survey at Warwick Uni campus was a great success with 14 people coming along to search for nests. 9 were found & a partial nest also discovered. Would you recognise a Water Shrew if you came across one? They have dense black hair with a white/cream belly. They have tiny eyes and small ears and a good pointed nose! They are one of our biggest shrews reaching almost 100mm plus a tail about half that length. #Shrew #mammal
