First two books are available for download.

09.10.2025 13:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Deborah Harkness's A Discovery of Witches series is lovely. And it got three seasons of a show starring Theresa Palmer and Matthew Goode.

03.10.2025 20:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I typically use it to indicate I have received something (when read requests aren't on) but that an additional whole email saying I got the thing isn't necessary.
03.10.2025 19:46 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Excited to announce that University of Tennessee at Martin is hiring a TT faculty member! 23.09.2025 17:23 β π 2 π 3 π¬ 0 π 1To quote the glorious @lecagle.bsky.social: "The mountains are underwater and fascism is on the rise, so I recommend going ahead and getting that divorce you've been thinking about."
22.09.2025 19:03 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Just a reminder to check for your name in this list of books that OpenAI trained from. If your name is there, they probably owe you several thousand dollars.
OpenAI cried that if everyone eligible author files, the company will go bankrupt, so I'm alerting every author I have ever spoken to.
85! Saving up for big stuff.
03.09.2025 22:36 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Huge thanks to the editors for their support, and to my co-nerds @marisaey.bsky.social, Danielle, Adrianna, Jess, @argella.bsky.social, @sheltonweech.bsky.social, and @cbdilger.bsky.social!
02.08.2025 17:30 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Some nerds and I wrote about our experiences with mentorship for Rhetoric Review, and it's available now! "Recursive, horizontal, distributed, networked: Iterating transdisciplinary models of mentorship in the humanities" on pgs 18-27. doi.org/10.1080/0735...
02.08.2025 17:28 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 1π Thank you for your kind reading. I revised and published the first section for Journal of Basic Writing, but then went off to get a PhD in the pandemic. π« I'm now a WPA teaching BW again...so maybe it's time to try that study again with my student success colleagues and see what we get.

18.07.2025 19:11 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0New week, same old tip on how you can remember to add alt text to the images you share!
Bluesky has a setting that will remind you to add alt text before posting any images.
Go to "Settings," then "Accessibility." Select the checkbox for "Require alt text before posting."

We have rodeo AND equestrian teams here. Temperature drops below 60F and it's Carhartts as far as the eye can see. Having 4-H flashbacks daily.

03.07.2025 03:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A teacher with serious classroom needs and students suffering complex trauma asked for my help funding things for her classroom. I am sending things. As much as I hate Amaz&n, I will post a teacher's need list. On a dark day, a little way to help:

Goodies on the way from one Muppet/Star Wars loving teacher to another.
03.07.2025 03:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0My instinct would be to look to writing centers research and research on conferencing with students. I don't know any specific studies offhand, but those spaces are most likely to have it, I think.
03.07.2025 02:57 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There's a ton of academic work written on it as a result , including some dissertations: scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=e...
02.07.2025 15:27 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My PhD is in Rhetoric & Composition, and in my field there's an entire niche of folks who study this: handcraftedrhetorics.org
There's are usually folks talking about fiber arts at SWPACA too: southwestpca.org
Two personal insights: 1. I crochet instead of knit because my hands/brain can't make sense of two needles. Taught myself crochet via YouTube videos. 2. Tom Daley (UK swimmer) made knitting visible during the Olympics and went viral for things he knitted while in the stands. Uptick there.
02.07.2025 15:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'm in the humanities (BA Classics, MA and PhD in English) and every department I have been part of has had faculty married to another faculty member within the same dept. Getting a spousal hire is colloquially "winning the lottery." Small sample obvs, but would be curious to see how that impacts.
02.07.2025 01:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Obviously, though, the article is talking about K-12, and I teach higher ed. Those contexts are different and K-12 has other issues compounding the problem, but my access argument is the same.
29.06.2025 16:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes, it's time that our mentors didn't have to put into their teaching prep. We live and teach in a different era. We're not sages on the stage anymore. LMSs aren't about making our jobs easier, they're for ensuring access to our teaching for ALL of our students. It is part of the job.
29.06.2025 16:12 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0I agree with the critique of AI in the classroom here but want to note one thing.
The argument about LMSs isn't the way to go here. It presumes LMSs are supposed to make teaching easier--I don't think they are. They increase accessibility to our courses when used effectively. So yeah, that's hard.
