I compiled a sort of follow up here olivia.science/before/ on the situation with ppl thinking we're in some special moment:

"We have certainly been here before. Many many times in the past, companies β€” just like artificial intelligence (AI) companies now β€” have lied to us to sell us products."

Yes, the planet got destroyed. But for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders.

The uncritical adoption of AI technologies puts scientific integrity, diversity, sustainability, digital sovereignty and democracy at risk. We will discuss ways to resist this adoption in our Summer School β€œCritical AI literacies for Resisting and Reclaiming”

However, the uncritical adoption of AI technologies in academia is already showing the deskilling of students and teachers, along with an exponential increase of cases of fraud and plagiarism.

Thoughtfully Shaping Our Digital Future
To the parties forming the government in the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as the outgoing administration,

We are writing to you in recognition of your crucial responsibility for shaping current and future AI policy, overseeing digitization, and upholding public values. We are a coalition of scientists, experts, and representatives of civil society organizations. We believe it is essential to address these matters together.

This letter has two objectives:

a) Provide context for current plans, including the AI Delta Plan, the AIC4NL position paper, and the Invest-NL AI Deep Dive. These investment proposals often rely on assumptions that lack scientific evidence and do not fully reflect public values.

b) To offer a constructive, well-substantiated alternative approach to digital futures based on people, nature, and democracy. We believe a collaborative process should guide decisions on the needs, scope, and nature of investments by bringing together scientists, civil society organizations, and stakeholders.

Screenshot of text continuing from the previous post. It reads as follows: And many AI tools have fewer benefits and more harms. Let’s start with harms to the environment. Using AI means using data centers. Data centers evaporate water, spew pollutants, and use so much energy that people’s home electricity bills increase near them.
Beyond environmental harm, there are also social and mental harms. When a new drug comes out on the market, it has been well tested and regulated so that side effects are known and risks are minimal. AI has no such regulations, yet the side effects are extreme and the extent of risks are unknown. A teen was encouraged into suicide, adults have been driven to complete psychosis. AI is not just disrupting learning, it is disrupting our society, and not in a good way.
Last, we have hubris. I’ll end with part of the quote that Guest et al. open their paper with: β€œThe culture of AI is imperialist and seeks to expand the kingdom of the machine. The AI community is well organized and well funded [...] AI scientists believe in their revolution; the old myths of tragic hubris don’t trouble them at all.” That quote is older than I am, from a past era of overhyped, unsustainable, and poorly-defined AI. Those were my original three words, by the way. I stand by them, but I felt my revision provides a better framework for reflection: hype, harm, and hubris. Thank you.

Nobody has called me a technopessimist yet.

But I haven't done any research on this myself. I just try to make other people's research on the negative impact of LLMs reach as many people as possible.

igure 1: The important dimensions of CAILs across research and education; clockwise from 12 o’clock: Con- ceptual Clarity is the idea that terms should refer. Critical Thinking is deep engagement with the relationships between statements about the world. Decoloniality is the process of de-centring and addressing dominant harmful views and practices. Respecting Expertise is the epistemic compact between professionals and society. Slow Science is a disposition towards preferring psychologically, techno-socially, and epistemically healthy practices. The lines between dimensions represent how they are interwoven both directly and indirectly.

An interesting approach. After a (very) quick read, I'd like to highlight the following:

"We are pressured to believe that it is possible to automate the scientific process. But science itself is a form of cognition, and therefore cannot be automated..."
