Today, I watched the documentary "Sir, No Sir" about the G.I. Antiwar Movement during Vietnam. This was a movement primarily of men (and a few women) who were serving during the Vietnam War and decided what was happening was wrong. I highly recommend it. I found a free version on Youtube.

Alice Walker's "In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens." Coming from an evangelical background, it was my introduction to feminist thought. I know now, it was, as she said, womanist thought. But then I didn't really understand the difference and it shaped my thinking. Grateful for that.

When it shows up on our doorsteps, will we be this brave? Will I be this brave? Daily, I wonder what I should be doing now, learning now, to be prepared (if that is possible) for when it arrives. How does someone with my disabilities "stand" with these warriors?

Teen Vogue has had some of the most honest and best political reporting during both of Trump's terms. In a fascist state, this is how that kind of work is rewarded.

We know that being able to stay connected to family and other members of their support network while incarcerated reduces recidivism. So this decision isn't about better outcomes for families. It's about increasing the profit of the correctional telecom industry.

F.C.C. Changes Course on the Price of Prisoners’ Phone Calls

Today was a hard day. Regulations that we passed unanimously last year, after 7 years of advocacy, were largely gutted. The FCC capitulated to the correctional telecom industry in roughly doubling rate caps for prison and jail calls. I'm truly sorry.

What I Need You To Understand, Notes from Chicago in Late October | dansinker.com

"What I need you to know is we are organized.
What I need you to know is that you need to get organized.
What I need you to know is they are coming.
What I need you to know is you can stop them...
This is how it works: We protect each other, period. These are our neighbors, our friends, our family"

One of the saddest truths I've see on social media. When will we wake up and realize that sacrificing anyone for personal safety will never provide long term safety for anyone?

We need a Schoolhouse Rock reboot that focuses on civics and factual history - with inclusive graphics. They were effective. I just read the words "constitution" and "we the people" in a skeet and now that song is going through my head unbidden.

It is important to recognize that mental health symptoms can show up at school in ways that are often misinterpreted as bad behavior. This contributes to absenteeism and the school to prison pipeline. 🧡 #MIAW

Great representation of the various books by Black authors that have been banned.

Banned books are banned knowledge.

I was raised in a home where parental mental illness was present. Books were my lifeline to sanity and after I left home, they were the first steps I took to broadened my understanding of ppl different from me.

I've been aware of who #AssataShakur was for a few years. Bought her autobiography after reading several quotes from her that really resonated. But it was like other books I've bought out of interest but not gotten to. Her death brought it to the top of my reading stack. Halfway through. Recommend.

What struck me was the number of times Coates had to make the point that, for the Black community, this isn't the worst they've experienced. And it isn't the first time that a period of moving rights forward for nonwht/nonCIS/non-male ppl has been met with a backlash. That is important.

Do YOU remember β€œthe 21st night of September?”

Earth Wind & Fire’s co-writer Allee Willis said she told the band: β€œWe can’t leave β€˜baa-dee-ya’ in the chorus. That has to mean something.’”

Maurice White replied: β€œNo, that feels great. That’s what people are going to remember. We’re leaving it.”

1st, I want to acknowledge your sharing of this and thank you for it.

2nd, and this question (as was my 1st) is to @rephaleystevens.bsky.social : how can you call a vote to honor a man who used words as a weapon of political hate a vote against political violence?

You are right -- it is an ongoing processes. As you learn more, you see new ways it shows up in yourself and others. Not always in big blatent ways either. The nuances can be tricky and you'll miss them if you don't stay open to seeing and learning.

And I do realize its environmental impacts. I would rather society's use of it slow down. But kids are already using it, and I'd prefer they learn to use it as a tool instead of doing it for them.

This approach to AI seems promising to me. AI should assist, not replace a student's efforts (or anyone's efforts).
