Parker Molloy substack 1d @Jerusalem Demsas wrote a piece today in @The Argument responding to my criticism of their trans rights poll, so want to clarify what I actually meant and why. I have no beef with The Argument. I think their polling work is generally valuable. My tweet yesterday was heated and rude, and I want to be more precise here about what actually bothered me. My issue was never with polling the topic. My issue was with the framing of the analysis, which treated the erosion of public support for trans rights as something that happened to a public that was let down by activists who were too "confrontational" and left "little room for actual debate." That framing does a lot of work while leaving a lot out. What it leaves out: Republicans spent hundreds of millions of dollars on anti-trans advertising in the 2024 election cycle. They made it a centerpiece of their messaging strategy. When you spend that kind of money telling people to be afraid of a small, vulnerable group, public opinion moves. And when you describe that result without describing the cause, you end up pointing the finger at the people with the least power in the equation. And look, 1 agree that Democrats have done a bad job on this. When Senate Democrats debated anti-trans sports legislation, many of them couldn't even bring themselves to make a pro-trans argument. Instead, they focused on how invasive the bills would be for cisgender girls who might have their gender challenged. That's a real failing. That's on Democratic politicians, who have been getting this wrong even as trans activists have been begging for exactly this kind of advocacy for years. Demsas frames the path forward as focusing on where the public already agrees: anti-discrimination protections in housing and employment. And sure, those protections matter enormously (especially as states like lowa strip them away).
