I tracked my writing through my sabbatical and I am definitely someone who writes twice a week but puts out 1-3000 words at a time. Trying to do 250 or 500 words every day just didn’t work for me.

Combine a strong belief in an omnipotent God and a theology of glory with a culture of American exceptionalism with an actual reality of increasing powerlessness and this is what you get. We need to get a theology of the cross and more process theology out to our young people to actually help them.

I wish there was a way to assess maturity in candidates but sadly we have a system where the people who are honest and mature just don’t receive votes. 😔 I think Calgarians haven’t caught up to the reality that the mayor is going to be the mayor of millions of people. Charisma isn’t enough.

But can we drive across a bridge?

I know if I was being judged on things I said in my twenties, I would come up very short. Of course we are right to be skeptical of growth and change narratives, but I think maybe in this case it’s genuine? Not to say that we don’t hold anyone accountable for their past, but can we accept growth?

Hmmm… I lived in his ward when he was a councillor and interacted with him once. My thoughts at the time were that he seemed intelligent, inclined to listen, but was in with the wrong crowd. Essentially, he was young. He seems to have matured since then, which one would expect from someone his age.

I think a good reason to do a second PhD would be if you are doing one in an entirely different field. I only know one person who has two - one in theology and the other in biology. Humanities and science research in such different ways, that’s the only way I could see a second PhD as useful.

I definitely see the appeal. I wonder though whether a sabbatical might be a good opportunity to work on those different skills and research in new areas? It would save you repeating some of the basics you would have to do in a new PhD and let you customize according to your need.

As a Canadian, I don’t understand admissions letters. My kid applied to three different Canadian universities - all she submitted were her high school transcripts. No essays. No listing extracurriculars. Admissions are grade-based only. Why is the States so weird?

Kind of like when the Second Temple burned down because a Roman solider got impatient with his flaming arrow?

As someone professionally qualified to identify what or who is demonic, I can tell you with 100% certainty that it’s not “the explosion of transgender.”

From a decolonizing perspective, this needs a lot of unpacking. (Although I am not a Whitehead scholar.)

Finding tutors only reinforces the gap between those who have money and those who don’t. But that’s the point, isn’t it? Reinforcing two-tier education so the public system can be deemed unsuccessful and shuttered. Then we are in a pay to learn system where only a few learn (and profit).

Sabbatical #1 unlocked: 50 books/articles read, 40k words written, 2 YouTube book reviews posted, 2 articles finalized, 7200 km travelled, and 35 notes for changes to my courses. I don’t know if I did the sabbatical right, but it sure was a lot of fun!

I still have my copy of the Webster’s Unabridged Deluxe Second Edition LLM that I requested for my birthday when I was a kid. I’m glad we’re still getting new upgrades!

I was wondering that too and wondered if perhaps Luke was making an even more radical statement than we thought. I wasn’t sure if priestly action was restricted to the temple grounds or not. But the simplest interpretation is often the best one. Thanks for responding!

Bible scholars - reading Luke 17:11-19 - were the priests that Jesus told the lepers to go to Samaritan priests? I can't understand geographically how the lepers got from Jesus to the priests at the Temple in Jerusalem and back so quickly. Help?

“Christian Identity” is a very specific phrase that does not refer to one identifying as a Christian. If you have never heard about it, it’s time to learn. I spend one class in my theology course teaching students about it.
