1945年（昭和20年）8月9日にアメリカ軍が日本の長崎市に対してプルトニウム型原爆ファットマンを投下。威力は広島の1.5倍。山で囲まれた長崎の地形のおかげで被害が少ないとされるが7万4千人が亡くなった。浦上天守堂の周囲には何もない。そこに拡がっているのは大量虐殺による死の気配だけ。

1945年8月9日の原爆の爆風と熱線で倒壊した長崎・浦上天主堂のがれきの中から見つかった木彫りの聖母像の頭部。爆心地から約500メートルにある天主堂は壁の一部を残して倒壊。 周辺では、信徒約12,000人のうち約8,500人が亡くなったとされる。長崎全域では約74,000人が亡くなった。
