Figure 1 shows Movement within and out of DC's center-based child care educator workforce, March 2023 to March 2024. At the top, a green shades shows the Newly employed in DC child care centers (679). From left to right in the middle, a blue shade shows Employed in a DC child care center, March 2023 (3,226), Remained at same center (2,057), and Employed in a DC child care center, March 2024 (2,999). Under the blue section, there is a gray section that lists Switched centers (267). At the bottom, a yellow/gold shade lists Left DC child care centers (902). The source is Urban Institute analysis of Division of Early Learning Licensing Tool (DELLT) data. Notes read that based on 3,905 unique educators observed across both time points. We used hire and separation dates included in the DELLT data to determine employment as of March 1st each year. We also used an educator's presence in one file but not another file to determine departure and/or new employment. Note that 64 educators that left DC child care were employed in a facility that had closed by March 1, 2024, signaling a potential layoff. Users can access this application programming interface (API) by directly hitting a URL endpoint or by using Stata or R. All data are returned in JSON format and can be viewed directly in a web browser.
