Haha. It’s best books season. And my debut was on so many of them last year that statistically I’ll never be on another list until like book 20. And that’s totally okay.

So many teachers have been telling me that they are getting queer books into the hands of readers, that they are working around bans and challenges and as much of the red tape and shadow banning as they can.

A teacher telling me they work at a Catholic school and they are happy there’s nothing on my cover that screams “queer”.

The Teacher: Student always come to me asking for romance. And I ask a “regular” romance and they say no. So I give them two girls kissing or whatever they want.

A teacher asking me point blank what in my book would get her fired.

Me: Ugh, I mean this character is queer & kisses this character. Both characters are cis girls.

The teacher: Oh yeah, that could get me fired. But I have a bunch of queer books in my classroom library. What admin doesn’t know…

This weekend anti-LGBTQIA+ hate speech incidents occurred in a number of buildings on campus.

Tomorrow, I’m having hard conversations with my students about the words they use, the words they listen to their friends use and how a slur has become frequent on campus.

I am furious and sad.

Sometimes for my students I think it’s control over a big project and they all want to write big projects.

Especially stuff that’s not in the public domain.

You know. Stuff with active copyright.

But a lot of the conversation was about what happens if someone tries to sell inspired by x game and it’s so close it’s a direct retelling just in another mode.

When is it not inspired by but plagiarism especially when it’s not a retelling?

Like I do feel that my students often do this. But since they are learning actively maybe inspired by is fine even if it’s really close.

They are learning by doing this.

Had a really interesting conversation about people writing novels that are “inspired by” video games or anime that literally stick way too close to the original.

And since I teach adaptations and retellings I have thoughts.

But also where is the line?
