Opinion | Hong Kong needs to better understand and balance ‘one country, two systems’ Officials should do more to help Beijing figure out how Hong Kong’s unique capitalist character can best serve national interests.

My latest #ThoughtoftheDayonChina: As Hong Kong turns 28, do its officials really get what Beijing wants? Rather than parrot mainland ways, they should help Beijing figure out how Hong Kong’s unique capitalist character can best serve national interests

Commentary: Trump misreads China at his own peril Faulty assumptions and flawed advice are complicating Washington’s approach to Beijing, says former SCMP editor-in-chief Wang Xiangwei.

As Trump bombs Iran and shifts focus to the Middle East, it is easy to overlook the pressing need for him to navigate the ongoing trade deal with China. My commentary explores how his flawed understanding of Beijing could complicate these negotiations. www.channelnewsasia.com/commentary/c...

Today’s People’s Daily, CCP’s flagship newspaper, devoted much of its front page to an interview with Ren Zhengfei. Huawei founder touches upon a slew of issues worthy of attention. To me, the most interesting bit is the headline: the more open our country is, the more progress we will make.

Opinion | Thanks to Trump, US threat of a ‘peaceful evolution’ recedes for China His declaration that the US is done intervening could not have come at a better time for Chinese leaders, who have long fretted over Western influence undermining party rule.

My latest #ThoughtoftheDayonChina: with the rise of Trump Doctrine and the city upon a hill losing luster, Chinese officials need no longer be preoccupied with the spectre of “peaceful evolution”, a concern that once kept their predecessors awake at night.

Commentary: Trump blinked again on tariffs, but China isn’t in the clear There’s an irony to claiming victory in a trade war that yields no winners, says former SCMP editor-in-chief Wang Xiangwei.

My latest #ThoughtoftheDayonChina : both China and US claimed victory in a tariff war that yields no real winners. Questions arise about how China is prepared to fully open up to American businesses, and how the US is prepared to reciprocate.

I have earned bragging rights:on Monday last, I sticked my neck out by predicting that US-China trade talks were likely to occur soon. At that time, my unconventional view was met with skepticism given the intense rhetoric from both sides. open.substack.com/pub/wangxian...

It looks increasingly likely that both Beijing and Washington are heading for a ceasefire just hours after Trump’s extreme 104 per cent tariffs on Chinese imports took effect.
