Denver was built in the years after the Civil War and has a section of streets named after Union heroes: Lincoln, Sherman, Grant, Logan… I also went to Ulysses S. Grant Middle School. We’re not perfect though- until a few years ago we had the South High Rebels (with a confederate soldier mascot)

I was at a cafe in Albania (where I was serving as a Peace Corps volunteer) and a Black man sat down. This in itself was rare enough, but it turned out to be Clarence Gilyard (from Walker, Texas Ranger). He was in town doing a play with the national theater. We had a nice chat about his travels.

He says kids don’t need 250 pencils. Ask anyone who had ever taught….they always seem to start the year with 250 pencils, but by like December, all the pencils have dissolved into air. 5 pencils won’t even last a week in 6th grade.
