New article accepted in Journal of Medical Ethics! I argue that
priority rules where registered organ donors are given priority may discriminate. But they’re not necessarily wrong. If wrong, it’s for contingent reasons like problematic motivations. #Bioethics #Discrimination #organdonation

In this case, at least, some of the features sometimes suggested to be relevant by ethicists did not make a difference for judgements of permissibility.

Participants assessed cases where a disabled patient was denied treatment based on 5 different reasons (e.g. lower life quality, shorter lifespan, higher cost, etc.).

Across all conditions, respondents judged the discrimination morally impermissible. No justification made a significant difference.

Article accepted: (with Hallsson and Nielsen):
The Moral Justifications of Disability Discrimination in Health Care Allocation: An Experimental Assessment

My review of Jordan Parsons’ Opt-out has been accepted by American Journal of Transplantation! A thoughtful book on consent and organ donationβ€”I’m glad to be part of the conversation.

Where Is My Paper

This is great! I discovered this when I asked about the status of a paper I have submitted to the Journal of Medical Ethics. Provides much more information than the usually available in editorialmanager etc(such as whether a reviewer has accepted the invitation to review).

I remain both hopeful and confident that it will benefit those who are waiting for an organ to prolong their lives. In interaction with many other important efforts being roled out. Civic society, patient interest groups and other political initiatives are already making a difference.

Compared to some European implementations, the Danish government threads lightly here. As someone who has argued in favour of opt-out policies and participated in the debate on this issue for many years, I am pleased to see that action is being taken.

Tomorrow Denmark becomes an opt out organ donation country.
Adult citizens with no registered preference regarding organ donation will be registered as a 'non-confirmed consent'. But, people’s organs will only be used if they confirm or their relatives consent to this. #bioethics #organdonation

Loved hosting the Controversial markets conference in Aarhus❀️ Amazing talks and the exchanges just went on seamlessly. Talking about altruism walking the bridge with no end; debating crowding out in the beautiful forest and discussing organ markets over dinner. I could not have wished for more❀️πŸ₯³

Copenhagen bound! To give a talk on 'Market discrimination' at the CEPDISC Workshop on Poverty. I'll talk about how some of the badness of discrimination that happens in relation to market transactions can be explained by people not adhering to market norms.

Every now again it’s useful to repeat advice about accessing papers that are behind a paywall that excludes you. Email the author. My estimate is that 90% of academics are so thrilled that a living, breathing, possibly even reading, person shows interest that they will swiftly send you a copy.
