Well-managed urban stormwater ponds can be places of refuge and beauty. Here, a pair of pelicans has been in this naturalized stormwater pond for several weeks.

Halfway through construction, new lock at the Soo project reaches milestone SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (WJMN/WBUP) β€” A major construction project in the Sault reached a milestone this month as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District reviewed and approved

The new lock at the Soo, constructed at the former site of the decommissioned and demolished World War I era Sabin Lock, will mirror the Poe in size (1,200 feet in length and 110 feet in width).

Thank you to Ann Arbor for this huge vote of confidence in your library! We can't wait to get started on making everyone's dreams come true; we are up to the challenge and ready to create something truly special. Thanks to all our staff and supporters, and everyone who helped make this happen!

Aug. 5, Ann Arbor voters approved 2 ballot questions, clearing the way for the city & @aadl to begin drafting a formal agreement that will bring to fruition a long-envisioned civic project in the heart of downtown. Details:

voting YES to build a bigger and better library might not say too much about a voter's view on land use reform.

but, voting NO likely means the voter is in the hardest core of preservationists, and that hard core is only 12% of the electorate.

This state-of-the-art building will have additional inventory, an outdoor play area, a kids room, gathering space, performance venue, gallery, studio, cafe, and mixed-income housing, all for zero new tax dollars.

though, to be fair, @aadl.org is uniquely beloved, and probably the most trusted institution in ann arbor, much more than council.

since the opposition tied the library vote to land reform, i think it’s fair to hope that this election will stiffen the spine of city council which has been diminishing its ambitions for a dense and inclusive city.

06.08.2025 11:53 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

the opposition campaign was full of lies and attempted to tie a larger library to anxieties around separate push to get rid of single family house zoning.

it is heartening to see the voters reject both the lies and that fear.

yesterday, ann arbor had an election with only one issue on the ballot: could @aadl.org take over an parking lot to build an even bigger and better downtown library.

turnout was 28% which is really high for an off cycle election, and voters supported the library by a 15 point margin!

hell yeah!

the great thing about getting involved in local politics is that now you can be anxious about national AND local politics.

By a 2-4x multiple! Base flow can be under 200cfs when a gully washer hits. Sewer water dominates the flow into Gallup pond. In a winter rain event you'd see brief high salinity on that stretch of river, if anyone measured. All physical climate adaptation in A2 works backwards from there.

in some memo arguing against the daylighting of allen creek, a water commissioner pointed out that after a heavy rain the output of allen creek can be greater than the total flow of the huron immediately upstream.
