Moving and transporting a fridge is a PITA - bulkier, heavier, and more fragile than any piece of furniture.

My apartment didn't come with a fridge. Probably have saved thousands of dollars in rent as a result.

This happened organically on an empty lot in my neighborhood a few years ago and then someone snitched and they fenced off the lot and killed it. The lot is still empty and unused to this day and I'm still mad.

Have there been any attempts to extend this to renters? I'd imagine most farmworkers aren't homeowners. And what about people in mobile homes and trailers?

Farmworkers in the Hottest Part of California Find State Funds to Cool Their Homes and Save on Energy - Inside Climate News California allocates $20 million a year for energy efficiency upgrades for low-income homeowners, and supporters of the farmworkers program want $10 million added.

Farmworkers in the Coachella Valley work in intense heat 8 months a year. Air conditioning is essential to their recovery at the end of each day. But it's expensive!

I visited on a sweltering day to document an effort to bring costs down for one family. 🌞

Transit advocates who support automated enforcement should be throwing down for safeguards like this. There's a lot of potential to use this tech to save lives, but it's increasingly vulnerable to co-option for Trump's police state.

Newsom just vetoed a bill to regulate license plate readersΒ β€” even as fresh evidence of misuse emerges The measure would have required regular purges of license plate databases and regularly audited how automated readers are used.

Gruesome Newsom just vetoed a bill to regulate license plate readers due to opposition from RivCo's fascist sheriff, despite widespread reports of cops using them to stalk love interests and sharing data with ICE. calmatters.org/economy/tech...

Is anyone in California seriously looking at any sort of new tax in 2026? Because we are going to need it to replace all the revenue and functions Trump is stealing from us.

Pretty bad that blue states aren't in control of their National Guards.

Trump 2.0 has really exposed how brittle and broken the West Coast states' tax systems are. WA, OR, and CA all have a 1% property tax cap. WA has a sales tax but no income tax; OR has an income tax but no sales tax. It is not possible to effectively resist Trump without fixing these tax systems.

The Administration

- raised taxes on clean energy with the one big beautiful bill

- is stopping or making clean energy projects harder to be built

- is raising prices on energy & materials with tariffs

- all while AI is spiking electricity demand. It’s a crisis podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

The Hideaway in Downtown Riverside sometimes has original acts although it's more of a "small music venue" than hang-out bar. The Vault in Redlands is good for being a hang out bar that also has a lot of original act.

imo people in group 2 are winnable (and I get annoyed at YIMBY Left-punching for this reason) but they often rely on group 1 for funding. It's illuminating that the LA Left shifted on housing after AHF was defanged.

In the case of 2 tenant activism selects for people who really, really don't want to move (often elderly/disabled) and so that view is overindexed in those circles. And LA developers have a long history of shady dealings (encouraged by restrictive zoning) so some suspicion is understandable.

I think there are two camps:
1) LA elites that use certain types of charity to launder their social position while maintaining the status quo
2) Well-intentioned lower income activists who are put off by YIMBY vibes and perceive it as a Trojan horse for neoliberal policies
