The Regents now have to decide if they will surrender to the Trump administration’s demands. As workers who have fought for academic freedom, equity in the workplace, and economic justice, we urge the Regents to refuse any compromise that undermines our values and puts workers at risk... instead of continuing the historical trajectory of declining per-student funding, it is time for the state of California to stand its ground, for Newsom to double down on his fight against Trump’s regime, and for the legislature to increase funding to the UC to support the vital role it plays in millions of Californian lives and livelihoods.

On Friday August 8, the Trump administration demanded a $1 billion “settlement” from UCLA after freezing $584 million in federal grants for vital scientific and health research. The proposed $1 billion agreement would be the largest settlement since Trump began extorting universities, and marks the first attempt of the federal government to ransom payment from a public university. These attacks have been waged under the guise of fighting antisemitism and investigating alleged Title VII violations, but we see them for what they are: an attempt to cripple public higher education in the nation’s premier public university system.

Another new interim policy that will go into effect Fall 2025:

Faculty may be disciplined for extramural speech when the “university’s interests” outweigh the “employee’s expressive interests.”

We must resist these blatant attempts to criminalize and chill faculty free speech!

On June 23, the Regents’ Workgroup on Faculty Discipline Policies and Procedures released Interim Policies. Some will go into effect Fall 2025 without review, including:

The Gov says his May revise reduces the 8.95% cut to UC to a 3% cut, still plans to defer the compact funding 1 year (a $240 million cut to UC in 2025-26). UC's May funding should be up 5.95% relative to January's proposal, but somehow it shows a $16 million cut: ebudget.ca.gov/budget/2025-...

The annual State Higher Education Finance report came out. Key figure: "Total education revenue at two-year institutions in California was $11,131 per FTE (82% of the U.S. average), while four-year total revenue was at $17,114 per FTE (81% of the U.S. average)."

1) The ill-conceived Information Security Investment Plan that President Drake is attempting to impose on all campuses without any faculty input (see the exchange between President Drake and the Academic Council regarding “Information Security Investment Plans” at drive.google.com/file/d/10XBt...).

We want to encourage UC academic senate faculty to attend a special meeting of the systemwide Academic Senate General Assembly to be held this Friday, January 17, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. This meeting will discuss three issues affecting UC faculty:
