Carbonate biominerals are a big deal. For global carbon cycling, and our understanding of past climates... But how do they form?! There's a lot we don't know. Come and join us to build a computational model of these mysterious processes!

A geochemical schematic of the biological and crystallographic processes of biomineralisation. A mineralized skeleton (bottom) grows from a calcifying fluid which is separated from external seawater by a layer of tissue. There are multiple possible ways to transport ions across this tissue layer to the site of calcification (solid arrows), which are often associated with the co-transport or counter-transport of other ions (dashed arrows).

A conceptual space for exploring the dynamics of biomineral geochemistry, with labels for a calcite biomineral.
