Last rant (for the day) about the "Reclaiming Science" MAHA event.

Deputy Director Memoli (who was described as running NIH inside whereas Director Bhattacharya handles external issues [Narrator: Normally, the NIH Director does not delegate NIH management] participated in a panel discussion.

That's just outstanding.

Best I've seen so far is "A Fistful of Sausages." :-)

@zaphodbeebledoc.bsky.social had this, and a few others.

Continuing a meme: Ruin a movie by replacing one word in the title with "Sausage".

Here are a few:

Isn't sand basically defined as fine-grained rock/mineral material? (Smaller than pebbles, coarser than silt and clay)

And bassalt-based black sand is a definitely a thing on Earth that people pay tourism dollars to see while calling it sand! :-)

I guess Earth's black sand beaches don't have sand then! :-)

Well, that ain't gonna' work!

Now that that snow removal's done, naturally the washer failed to drain. After siphoning the water out with leftover aquarium gear and disassembling, I see the impeller completely sheared off the rusted shaft.

Pump is out of production at LG, but $50 on ebay.

A Muller plot generated by ggmuller. The horizontal axis is time, and shapes of different colours represent genotypes (or other subtypes), with height corresponding to genotype frequency (or relative abundance) at the corresponding time point. Descendant genotypes are shown emerging from inside their parents. In this example, colour represents relative fitness.

In 2017 I created the ggmuller R pacakge to draw "Muller plots" combining phylogeny and frequency dynamics. The latest version 0.7.0 fixes deprecated dependencies and includes a few other minor improvements.

Mammary Alveolar Proliferation and Differentiation During Early Pregnancy is Regulated by E2F5 The E2F transcription factors are well-established cell cycle regulators, but their roles in coordinating proliferation and differentiation remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the function...

Third preprint from the lab in as many weeks... this time, the loss of transcriptional control of early pregnancy by E2F5 results in alveolar defects. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Hey, @drdorotask.bsky.social is here on Bsky!

Such cool work.

We think that retinas degenerate with time and that if all of us live long enough, we’ll get AMD or other neurodegenerative diseases.

But Greenland sharks manage to live for hundreds of years and repair their eyes.

How?

Our Solar System is orbiting the center of our Galaxy at about 220 km/s so in 2025 we collectively traveled something like 7 billion kilometers across the Milky Way. Once in a while, when you have a moment, it’s worthwhile to take a look around, see where you are, and appreciate how far you’ve come.
