Living halfway between Jack London ferry pier & Lake Merritt Bart would make the world your oyster, especially combined w/ a bike. The Berkeley flats somewhere between the future ferry pier & North Berkeley Bart station is great if you prefer lower density streetcar suburb vibes.

In the SF bay area, the ferry is as good as it gets for transbay commuters. Mad respect for people who are able to orient their housing/work situations to take advantage of the ferry. You might like Alameda, Jack London Square, Richmond, or Berkeley when/if they finish the ferry pier.
