it has more in common, in fact, with with the antebellum slaveholder preoccupation with (its vision of) medieval europe, a romantic notion of Anglo supremacy that you can see articulated, in similar form, during the early days of american imperialism at the turn of the 20th century.

rubio’s invocation of “western civilization” — defined here as racial and religious chauvinism, if not outright supremacy — is a rejection of the more egalitarian and universalistic notions that came out of america’s two revolutions.

Yes it’s Valentine’s Day. But it’s also the chosen birthday of Frederick Douglass who was born in 1818 on a plantation in Talbot County, Maryland. He escaped from slavery & rose to become the most eloquent and forceful voice for the abolition of slavery & for Black voting rights in the U.S.

Beliefs serve at least two core functions.

1) they help us navigate the world
2) they serve as signals to manipulate others

Philosophers & psychologists have focused on the first while largely overlooking the second

Here I talk about what I call Douglass's fugitive liberalism, by which I mean the way his constitutional liberal values interacted with the law and the state when the law and the state were turned against the people. Under-appreciated dimension of his political philosophy!

Misappropriating Douglass Frederick Douglass deserves every bit of the accolades heaped upon him, but he was not a libertarian—and this isn’t a close call.

Folks are doing the Douglass birthday thing, so I will do a short thread of essays I've written about him, or channeling him.

First is this piece pressing back against the belief among libertarians that Douglass was one of theirs. He wasn't. In fact he rejected Garrison's libertarianism.

"We waked up stark mad Abolitionists" - Salon.com Inside the New England big money, made off of slavery, that also funded the fight to keep slavery out of Kansas

I've been thinking a lot lately about how communities in the Antebellum North organized to protect Black Americans from kidnapping enslavers, and also how witnessing (and resisting) such kidnappings slowly radicalized a critical mass of white Northerners against slavery www.salon.com/2017/08/05/w...

In 1854, after watching the federal government deploy 2000 federal troops and spend $40,000 sending Anthony Burns back into slavery, Boston's Amos Adams Lawrence said “we went to bed one night old-fashioned, conservative, Compromise Union Whigs and waked up stark mad Abolitionists.”
