The learning loop and LLMs

I've wasted time, and watched many developers waste time, going round and round in circles with "AI" coding assistants trying to get the cat to lay eggs.
There are always going to be things LLMs simply can't do, because the training data just isn't there.

NOUVELLE VIDEO ! Je décortique le cas Luc Julia, le réputé co-créateur de Siri et expert mondial de l'IA, encensé dans les médias et récemment auditionné au Sénat. Le résultat est salé mais c'était nécessaire.

Long and interesting read about AI and 10x developers. I like that there are arguments and explanations for the different statements.

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry. Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto. It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.
The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

Even with LLMs, @birgitta410.bsky.social still cares about the code: “LLMs are NOT compilers, interpreters, transpilers or assemblers of natural language, they are inferrers.

Staff engineer @lawrencejones.dev has been building impressive AI tooling systems for closer to a year - and, naturally, using AI coding tools as well.
His take on vibe coding:
"Vibes-driven-development inevitably becomes just bad vibes."

To work effectively with agentic coding assistants, Birgitta Böckeler found she needs to intervene, correct and steer all the time. She describes examples of these interventions indicating the skills we need to correct the tools' missteps

Facts don't matter. Research doesn't matter. If it has research aesthetics and has the vibes you like, people treat it as truth.
