The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News. A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something else—when it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARY—is about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

Good point this. The macroeconomic point of raising taxes is not to raise money but to cut consumption, thereby diverting resources to the public sector & investment. That requires taxes on the middlingly rich. Taxing the mega-rich is necessary (if not sufficient!) to legitimate such rises.

You can't have a successful economy by kowtowing to bigots who want to close the country to the rest of the world. It'd be nice if a politician had the brains or guts to point this out.

This. The Tories, Reform UK Ltd & even Labour hate the actually-existing British economy, whose comparative advantage lies in higher education & the creative industries.

They're delegitimizing themselves in substance by subverting the Constitution and aiding the establishment of a lawless autocracy. But they're further delegitimizing themselves because they really don't understand, and can't even halfway convincingly mimic, how the Court is supposed to function.

The credibility of the Court, of any court, lies in how they're supposed to explain their reasoning, how they act as the outcome of an adversarial process. When they stop doing that, their standing with the general public collapses, sure. But as we see, their authority over lower courts also erodes.

Good this. The thing is that Macmillan could be a one-nation Tory because British capitalism then was working for millions. Today it is not. That removes the economic base of one-nation Toryism.

The US Constitution has no innate defense against lying by public officials and complete shamelessness.

Federal agents reporting to Secretary Noem have spent weeks snatching up families, scaring law-abiding residents, violating due process rights, and even detaining U.S. citizens.

They fail to focus on violent criminals and instead create panic in our communities.

Unanimous First Circuit takes pains to emphasize that this was an incredibly easy case to decide, despite writing a very long opinion knocking down every ridiculous argument the Trump admin made.

Finally, as someone who spends a fair amount of time talking with reporters about current events, I have noticed that, as a group, reporters are getting less and less interested in whether this or that Administration action is legal. Law has limited value as predictor of what this Administration will do. And with the Supreme Court so frequently overriding lower courts’ injunctions against the Administration’s lawlessness in minimally reasoned Shadow Docket orders, even many of the brightest and most capable reporters seem to feel little need to sort through statutes and caselaw. I do not share their skepticism, but persuading them that law matters is getting more and more difficult. That by itself is a fundamental change in our constitutional order.
