13.10.2025 21:12 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News. A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.
Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something elseโwhen it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARYโis about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

The search on Mar-a-Lago happened in August 2022. Jack Smith was appointed Special Counsel in November 2022.
Time, how does it work
This is a really well doneโI hope it catches on: A silent roadside protest staged over the weekend in Westerville, Ohio, and posted to the Facebook page of the Westerville Progressive Alliance.

Good point this. The macroeconomic point of raising taxes is not to raise money but to cut consumption, thereby diverting resources to the public sector & investment. That requires taxes on the middlingly rich. Taxing the mega-rich is necessary (if not sufficient!) to legitimate such rises.
08.10.2025 10:56 โ ๐ 9 ๐ 6 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0You can't have a successful economy by kowtowing to bigots who want to close the country to the rest of the world. It'd be nice if a politician had the brains or guts to point this out.
08.10.2025 08:39 โ ๐ 54 ๐ 21 ๐ฌ 4 ๐ 1This. The Tories, Reform UK Ltd & even Labour hate the actually-existing British economy, whose comparative advantage lies in higher education & the creative industries.
08.10.2025 11:31 โ ๐ 27 ๐ 12 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0They're delegitimizing themselves in substance by subverting the Constitution and aiding the establishment of a lawless autocracy. But they're further delegitimizing themselves because they really don't understand, and can't even halfway convincingly mimic, how the Court is supposed to function.
11.10.2025 22:17 โ ๐ 577 ๐ 88 ๐ฌ 7 ๐ 2The credibility of the Court, of any court, lies in how they're supposed to explain their reasoning, how they act as the outcome of an adversarial process. When they stop doing that, their standing with the general public collapses, sure. But as we see, their authority over lower courts also erodes.
11.10.2025 22:17 โ ๐ 501 ๐ 84 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 2Good this. The thing is that Macmillan could be a one-nation Tory because British capitalism then was working for millions. Today it is not. That removes the economic base of one-nation Toryism.
12.10.2025 08:30 โ ๐ 39 ๐ 18 ๐ฌ 5 ๐ 2The US Constitution has no innate defense against lying by public officials and complete shamelessness.
12.10.2025 13:08 โ ๐ 491 ๐ 122 ๐ฌ 14 ๐ 3Attacks on the federal workforce are also attacks on Black workers, who are overrepresented in the public sector.
Black unemployment is 7.5%. I'm reminded of Coates' observation that Black Americans regularly experience conditions that would be considered a crisis if whites faced them.
Excellent piece, and the book referenced amongst this larger historiography of womenโs history looks fab.
12.10.2025 12:46 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Picture how big the Hoover Dam is. An absolute unit. The Hoover Dam has a power capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW).
The solar farm that the Admin just cancelled could have produces 6.2 GW of power. That's more than 3 Hoover Dams.
Kemi Badenoch blames those crossing borders for our problems. Itโs a lie aimed to distract.
The real issue is a system protecting the super-rich while nurses & carers canโt make ends meet. Tax wealth fairly, fund public services properly. This is how we give Britain hope again.
Priorities.

Just as were "signature" strikes in Pakistan and Yemen.

02.10.2025 13:28 โ ๐ 5224 ๐ 1321 ๐ฌ 149 ๐ 26Federal agents reporting to Secretary Noem have spent weeks snatching up families, scaring law-abiding residents, violating due process rights, and even detaining U.S. citizens.
They fail to focus on violent criminals and instead create panic in our communities.
Unanimous First Circuit takes pains to emphasize that this was an incredibly easy case to decide, despite writing a very long opinion knocking down every ridiculous argument the Trump admin made.
03.10.2025 21:42 โ ๐ 2281 ๐ 689 ๐ฌ 25 ๐ 19Finally, as someone who spends a fair amount of time talking with reporters about current events, I have noticed that, as a group, reporters are getting less and less interested in whether this or that Administration action is legal. Law has limited value as predictor of what this Administration will do. And with the Supreme Court so frequently overriding lower courtsโ injunctions against the Administrationโs lawlessness in minimally reasoned Shadow Docket orders, even many of the brightest and most capable reporters seem to feel little need to sort through statutes and caselaw. I do not share their skepticism, but persuading them that law matters is getting more and more difficult. That by itself is a fundamental change in our constitutional order.
@davidasuper.bsky.social has an interesting piece up on Balkinization, at the end of which he makes the point that because the administration is breaking the law so much of late, journalists are starting to be less interested in even reporting what the law isโ
