After announcing it in the summer, today the UK government launched free training courses to AI upskill workers. It's free because it's funded by big-tech companies such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft and others, and not by local organisations in the UK who have been working with communities->

In my first op-ed for @nytimes.com, I argue that the alliance between Silicon Valley & the US government is a threat to democracy. The Republican tax bill now up in the Senate, which would ban states from regulating AI for a decade, will only cement that trajectory. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/30/o...

20.03.2025 11:43 — 👍 6 🔁 2 💬 1 📌 0The Science and Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, said: Everywhere you see, there is an imbalance of power in this country which has – for too long – made it impossible to imagine a better future for Britain. To deliver our Plan for Change we have to shift the balance of power, away from stagnation and old ideas, towards innovation and opportunity, and the bold people building a new future for Britain. In doing so, by 2035 we could see a whole new Britain emerge, harnessing the power of technological development, from engineering biology to AI, semiconductors and cyber security, or quantum and future telecoms for a stronger economy and better lives for all in the UK.
Statement from DSIT today is so confusing. There has been a power imbalance in this country. Which can only be fixed by ignoring the needs of civil society in favour of working with big tech and VCs. Because, they are not powerful enough? Does it mean old ideas like ethics, safety and inclusion?
