As many have pointed out, Mamdani didn't stand apart from our trans brothers and sisters. He didn't play the "Gee, gosh, it sure is complicated," milquetoast moderate card. And he crushed.

This is not snark, this is me honestly expressing a thing I find really helpful in winnowing my TBR down to something approaching manageable size

I think my favorite part of people asking for book recs on social media is seeing people respond with like "I love these 4 authors they're so amazing!" and you recognize 3 of the 4 as authors whose work you really did not enjoy and now you can remove the 4th author from your over-long TBR list

Oh no! Yeah, I've seen people start as like X Specialist who get a doctorate in X because they want to work their way up the ladder to X Director as positions open. That seems like a sensible bit of planning ahead to me.

Or prior to this year, some of the folks pursuing research jobs made sense

I used to regularly get into arguments with people about how library schools need to close the floodgates because for every 1 student who comes in knowing the risks, there are 5 more who are sold false hope and debt they can never escape

you have time, money, spoons, and the desire to spend 3-9 years of your life focused on one specific thing? sure, have fun

you have a job and need this cert for a promotion? it might work

you're already struggling to find work and think this is your ticket to a cushy university job? 😂😱 💀
