We had to bring multiple class actions and go to the state supreme court like seven times, facing ferocious opposition not only from employers and the restaurant association but also from insurance companies, in order to vindicate and compensate workers and get basic standards for health insurance.

So employers started offering the worst bullshit health plans, those old supplemental things like AFLAC that were without any value at all on their own, and that were barely better than setting out a bowl of aspirin on the break room at work.

This was significant, because it came out to a 15% reduction in an employer’s wage bill and cost workers a dollar for every hour they worked.

The drafters of the ballot measure, however, failed to set any standards for what “health insurance” was or what sorts of coverage it had to carry to qualify an employer to pay employees a dollar less.

No that’s entirely what they are. Credibility matters to a government because it relies on public support in a liberal democracy.

I don’t see the multi round games frame as enlightening. But you’ve identified a move toward not caring about a particular bourgeois aspect of high politics—reputation, credibility, etc.

You can wish for lots of things.
