I think my relationship to videogames is changing again. I'm actually contemplating going full retro, but where's the cutoff for
that? For me
it's around the Xbox360/Gamecube era.

Kind of a strange resolution for 2026: I plan to buy as few videogames as possible. Focusing on titles from 2025 or earlier and playing things I haven't got around to yet.

I kinda love this. Especially when you look at the level of detail they went into designing it, compared to how that translates on the pixel art sprites. I'd never have noticed if it wasn't pointed out, I'm rushing for the Heavy Machine Gun asap anyway.

The Xbox360/PS3 era was the highest point for me in terms of Game design. There was still a soft limit on what a game size could be because it had to fit on a disc, so bloat was a bit rarer. The PS4/XB1 era was where the brakes came off of file sizes, and bloat became the norm way too fast.

This is a great illustration of creativity in the 90's. R-Type, Gradius and 194-series were chasing the same audience with similar game mechanics; but even now, none of them feel like shovelware clones. A modern dev would throw all of their features into one game and come out with a mess.
