You are likely thinking of Biontech a German startup that is now publicly traded. They are not a subsidiary of any other company.
Lots of mRNA research is happening outside of the US, does not mean the US cuts won't leave a big gap.

I would not rely on that. Not every scientist is internationally mobile. Setting up a new lab takes a long time, and science funding isn't abundant enough to compensate for the US reducing theirs. A lot of research will be slowed down or will cease to happen.

Do you get to enjoy Freiburg for a bit? I've grown quite fond of it and the surrounding landscape.

A thick stack of exam papers

15min before the final cutoff and all students have handed in their exams.
Now my work starts to check and grade them.

20min left and only two students are still holding on. Studious checking and double checking is going on.

Glad to see that my goal to not overload the exam and not rush students was achieved.

With 30min to go we are down to five students. Makes my supervision task very easy.

Questions I have asked myself so far during this exam:
Is this student raising their hand or stretching?
Wow, what a facial expression! I wonder which problem they are currently tackling.
Will there be a link between when they hand in and their grades?

With 45min left we are down to about half the students. I wonder when they'll all be done.
Last year one student stayed until the very last minute even so he was finished. That's his right and I don't mind, but the last 15min with me just staring at one student were a little awkward.

The first hour is over and a first group of students have left. I had asked that no one leaves in the first hour so that it is quieter. Now that time is up a third have decided to go. I am not surprised, I had designed it so they have plenty of time for the exam.

Most students I did get to meet in the lecture and they were interested, engaged, and asked good questions. I hope they are able to demonstrate their learning in the exam.
I am not a fan of written exams, but at least they are AI proof so I don't have to worry about that avenue of cheating.

There are a handful of students in the exam who I never saw in the lecture, not even in the exam prep session. Let's hope for them that my uploaded lecture slides were good enough as exclusive prep for the exam.

Questions about how to understand the problems seem to especially come from students who have already written down the correct answer. Makes my answer very easy: yes you understand the problem correctly, don't worry.

Supervising a room full of students who are taking an exam is so odd. I just sit here for two hours staring at 30 students hoping no one tries to cheat so I don't have to handle such a situation. And I just watch them nervously tackle problems I came up with.

Take care of yourself! I got shingles a week after moving to another country for grad school, it was luckily caught early and the meds worked, but still a very unpleasant experience. So I hope you are much better soon!

Went with Constanze to the villages mentioned in Kurts diary in the Voges. We met up with members of a local French history association who focus on WW1 in the Voges and run a museum. So much new information and photos to go through!
