Not only that, but framing this argument in terms of “doing his bidding” psychologizes the issue in a simplistic (maybe even juvenile) way. It’s not about what one person (however powerful) wants. It’s about trying to save our imperiled political system.

Biden could have fired Garland without ever talking to him. That would have been a very powerful message to whoever came next.

Or, without even talking to Garland, he could have fired him and said publicly that it was because of inaction on the J6ers.

This just goes to show (once again)how completely full of shit the 2A enthusiasts have been all along.

Indeed. My experience over 30+ years in academia (grad student, adjunct, TT and tenured professor) is that while there are always hidebound academics, there are also always forward looking ones clamoring for some different kind of future.

I read it and found it interesting. But this time, winning must include at least the hope of holding accountable as many as possible of those who brought us the horrors of the past decade.

This wasn’t, as the Trumpists would have us believe, an “attack on The Christian Church.” It was an inter-denominational disagreement about how Christians should comport themselves in the world.

This punk landmark was released 44 years ago today, so I’m giving it an anniversary spin.

Good start. Now I await hearing about the criminal charges that will be used to punish those who tried to destroy UVA.

Imagine if the next President mobilizes ATF agents to scour the most Republican-voting precincts in red states to arrest firearm owners who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol: Raid bars, follow people home from liquor stores or anywhere beer is sold, etc.

I fear the latecomers and normies will press for “moving forward” and “finding common ground,” thus repeating a lethal mistake first made in the aftermath of the Civil War. Electoral victory, if it happens, must be followed by full scale criminal investigations into Trump, his cabinet, and more.

I think the really pertinent question is: who gets to steer the ship if we manage, via elections, to depose the fascists? The way I view it, the *votes* of the normies and latecomers are welcome. Any attempts by them after the elections to determine where we go are not welcome.

Elie Mystal at The Nation (you may be familiar with his work) has called for Walz to call up MN’s National Guard to protect the state’s citizens from ICE. I wasn’t yet aware of this when I made my earlier post. I understand that this may seem unthinkable, but perhaps these times demand it.

Then the state police (or Minn National Guard) should grab the first ICE agent they find and tell the agency that they’ll hold that person under armed guard until ICE gives up the real shooter.

The video alone should be enough for an arrest. Then see if a judge somewhere can help obtain access to other evidence. Keep the ICE goon locked up until that issue is resolved.

Why not? He’s already announced he’s not running for reelection. He has no excuse not to do the right thing. What we know (or at least fairly certain of) is that elected Democrats lack the courage to confront this moment in history.

Walz should announce that every ICE agent at the scene has been charged with murder. They have 12 hours to turn themselves in at State Police headquarters. If they do not, the Minnesota National Guard will be dispatched to capture the fugitives.

Interesting that Pete Hegseth (who’s probably had a few gin and tonics already today) sounds more sober than Donald Trump (who probably hasn’t).

This particular white male would have almost surely never gotten a faculty position if SAT scores had been considered at the time of application.

“The whole country’s uncritical acceptance” sounds as much like a high school dropout watching YouTube videos as it does like an academic exceptionalist, but your larger point still stands.

In some cases, specialists in premodern literatures at teaching-intensive institutions did damage to themselves in the early 2000s when they told newly-hired rhet/comp specialists that ours was mere “service work” and that we had no business suggesting changes to curricula for English majors.

Totally agreed. My mother and one of my brothers have been in a nasty conflict for more than a year now. It has nothing to do with me, but I’ve had to minimize contact with both of them for the sake of my own physical and mental health, because they always want to talk about it.

You’re welcome. For some of us, (especially rhet-comp/ writing studies people who got hired by English departments in the 1990s and early 2000s) the term “old fashioned literary criticism” can carry a lot of baggage. What I admire most about *TC* is how it departs from old fashioned lit crit.

As opposed to critics who read and write *without* care and attention? If so, who are they? (And I ask this question as someone who believes that *Track Changes* is one of the best Lit Crit books of the past quarter century.)
