It is becoming increasingly obvious, in fact, that the role of the
media is not only to tell Americans what they should think, but
to convince an increasingly angry and alienated public that their
neighbors have not come to the same conclusions. The logic is
much like that used to dissuade voters from considering third
parties: even if the third party challenger states opinions shared
by the majority of Americans,

Americans are constantly warned not to β€œwaste their vote” for the
candidate that actually reflects their views because no one else
will vote for that candidate. It’s hard to imagine a more obvious
case of a self-fullling prophecy. The result is a mainstream
ideologyβ€”a kind of conservative centrism that assumes what’s
important is always moderation and the maintenance of the status
quoβ€”which almost no one actually holds (except of course the
pundits themselves),

Maintaining the status quo is an essential part of the job of the mainstream media.

Artists of all walks:

Once you open "porn" up for removal, or acceptable removal, based upon a moving scale of gray morality, everyone's work is fair game. Everyone's. Because just being queer? Is considered by many perverse. Even if everyone has their clothes on, perverse.

Protect. Porn.

Excellent stuff from @graceblakeley.substack.com. People believe that if you build more houses then the price will come down. This simplistic analysis ignores the fact that the demand side is virtually unlimited due to the super rich wanting to buy up all of the assets.

It wasn’t until after 2010 though (especially after the failure of the 2009 COP, that everyone thought would be THE ONE to finally go through), that I started noticing the weird disconnects on security and climate change. And related questions popping up.

Here's the thing:

Everything is Gamergate because no one with any power to actually hold people accountable took this seriously.

The same will be true if every time something atrocious happens like this and no one is held accountable.

They are only further emboldened.

i would also add: "cooperative and nonconfrontational discussion" is not always desirable unless you live so far on top of the food chain that you are unaffected by the subjects being "discussed." demanding that people be "cooperative & nonconfrontational" about the knife in their stomach is >

Cities don’t even have to issue bonds

They can just create city public money they accept back in payment if city taxes

It's almost like people with tons of capital benefit from running the economy into a huge recession every decade or two so they can buy up assets on the cheap and consolidate even more wealth into a small number of hands

Early last semester, Droubi said, students began approaching Cheyfitz with complaints that a graduate student in the β€œGaza, Indigeneity, Resistance” class appeared to be recording them, possibly to β€œgather their names and comments” and intimidate them. β€œWe believe that a student came to the course for the sole reason of surveilling and potentially harming students in the class,” Droubi said. β€œThat ended up proving itself to be true because multiple students came forward and shared their concerns with Professor Cheyfitz.” Cheyfitz said one Palestinian student quit the class after telling him she felt upset and frightened.

According to Cheyfitz, the graduate student often steered conversations away from the assigned readingsβ€”which at that point mostly focused on definitions of genocide and international law on Indigenous rightsβ€”to defend Israel’s conduct in the war in Gaza and argue with others in the class. β€œHe clearly had not done the readings,” Cheyfitz said. β€œIt was disruptive.”

Cheyfitz said he met with the graduate student in late January and spoke to him about concerns from his classmates. During the conversation, he asked the graduate student to drop the course, and by the next class, he did, Cheyfitz said. The graduate student, Oren Renard, a PhD candidate in computer science whose identity was confirmed by other students in the class, previously served in Israel’s elite military surveillance agency, Unit 8200, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Cornell is cancelling a distinguished professor's classes on Gaza and suspending him because of the complaints of a student who previously served in Israel's military surveillance agency and was literally recording the comments of other students in class and deliberately derailing discussion.

When liberal students complain about misgendering or trigger warnings, they get dismissed as snowflakes.

When conservative students complain about DEI, they get faculty and administrators removed from their positions and subjected to inquiries.

Today, we are remembering David Graeber, who passed away five years ago.

People often dislike when art isn't fun and/or comforting.

They often dislike when art holds a mirror to them.

They dislike stories where a traumatized character causes unjust harm because people like to believe their trauma makes them righteous.

In short, these are all good things for art to do.

Eugenics, especially in educated and wealthy American circles, never died out after WWII. And there is no more environment more fertile for a true resurgence than Silicon Valley. People who think they are gods gift to the world, untrammeled by conscience, ethics or reality, really

It’s important to remember cisgender women getting hurt by this is a feature not a bug as it both makes trans women fearful of existing in public and signals to cis women how they must act to be protected by the state.

AI Eroded Doctors’ Ability to Spot Cancer Within Months in Study Artificial intelligence, touted for its potential to transform medicine, led to some doctors losing skills after just a few months in a new study.

β€œThe AI in the study probably prompted doctors to become over-reliant on its recommendations, β€˜leading to clinicians becoming less motivated, less focused, and less responsible when making cognitive decisions without AI assistance,’ the scientists said in the paper.”

International institutions were not designed to ensure universal rights. They were designed to maintain the core-periphery hierarchies of the world system. If we want universal rights we have to create new institutions through anti-imperialist and anti-racist struggle.

I have a very unpopular view about current state of affairs: What if the elites (governments in the imperial core, capital, big tech) are extremely aware of collapse, and this final stage of capitalism and authoritarianism is the last push before an impending societal collapse?

this morning I have been thinking about Orlando Letelier, the Chiliean economist assassinated by Pinochet's junta a month after he wrote the famous The Nation critique of the Chicago boys funding by the CIA, and Milton Friedman's overt support for their shock therapy.
