I donβt trust anyoneβleast of all technologistsβwho try to convince ppl that the worst part of being an artist is the process of learning how to make art and making itβ¦versusβ¦letβs see, wage theft, labor exploitation, plagiarism, online harassment & being fed into the machine by billionaires.

Marissa Barnathan responds, inviting us to consider: the impact of director's emotions (delight) on staging; process & personal experience in production; support & resources directors don't know we need; the integration of Michael Rohd's work in directing; audience resistance to engagement & risk.
30.07.2025 17:21 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A slide from Alex Mallory's presentation, citing Jill Dolan's *Performance in Utopia*. The quote reads "Utopian performatives are moments of performance in which utopia is 'done' in the intensity of exchange between performers and spectators and among the audience." a second quote reads "it describes the process of feeling together over obvious differences, inspired by an intensely present moment of theatre." The slide also features an image of a black actress seated on milk crates onstage, surrounded by an ensemble of performers in contemporary costuming who appear to be supporting her.
A series of vibrant images that feature an audience-engaged performances. Each image features a white femme actor in black short s and a white shirt, in front of a handmade primary-colored bright backdrop with photos on it, directly addressing seated audience members. In each image, she holds a white-and-black composition notebook. Above the images, text reads "Invitation: let the audience change the art"
Alex Mallory examines the possibility of creating utopic community within the scope of a performance event through voluntary artist/audience exchange that is mutually vulnerable and mutually giving. She demonstrates practice-based ontological examination of the possibilities. #TheatreSky #ATHE2025
30.07.2025 17:21 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Roblyer argues for a "career ecosystem" with a training model that distributes tools and knowledge and expertise, rather than functioning through mystique and concepts of inexplicable brilliance. He offers a new tool for teaching directing: deconstructingdirecting.com #ATHE2025 #TheatreSky
30.07.2025 17:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Roblyer presents, arguing for considering "upstream" source of future directors as those working in community and educational theatre that will eventually possibly flow "downstream" to regional and broadway. In the image, Roblyer, a white person wearing a forest green shirt and glasses with an undercut, is in the foreground. In the background, an image of a forest stream with arrows indicating the downstream/upstream ideas described above.
Andrew Roblyer challenges traditional considerations of theatre & the "upstream / downstream" perception of regional, Bway, community, & educational theatre in the US. He highlights the sheer number of directing jobs "upstream" before offering a new model directing training. #ATHE2025 #TheatreSky

Next, @tyler7662.bsky.social centers the value of returning to original language text when directing translations, even when the production plays with context, time, and location. He also highlights the value of imagery and cultural touchstones in guiding a director's vision. #ATHE2025 #TheatreSky

Andra Harbold reports on a new devised work developed through moment work: "moment building together heightened our delight radars and strengthened our creative muscle as an ensemble." She argues for directors to approach staging as a "practice of delight" #ATHE2025 #TheatreSky #Directing

30.07.2025 17:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I feel like we need a huge educational movement to teach the US public what journalism with integrity, standards, & process to ensure accuracy, accountability, & humanity looks like.
Too bad we canβt fund institutions or departments to do that work.

It is fucking insane that we had a decade of people complaining about the dangers of cancel culture, and now literally hundreds of thousands of people are being purged from government jobs for ideological reasons, but that is not cancel culture.

Doing anything for "purely financial" reasons in 2025, when you are a MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR CORPORATION, is also a political decision. It comes from a place of enormous privilege, because it means you can afford not to care about politics---because they protect & enrich you. 3/

As an academic, I am doing this:
Uplift those whose research you admire. Diversify the academy.
Many ways to do this:
-Nominate for awards (did 2 yesterday)
-If you are in an academy, nominate to it (did 3 this month)
-cite them in a paper and/or talk
this rings anecdotally true to me. it's not even "if you build it, they will come." it's "if you just restore its funding to early-2000s levels, they will come."
