Because they are federal property now, it's taking a commercial property off the tax rolls while likely imposing dramatic additional infrastructure costs.

Congress could repeal the prior multi-year $75b for DHS; set up a special investigative committee (cf. Watergate); amend the Insurrection Act; etc.

Verfassungsblog ON MATTERS CONSTITUTIONAL Q YEAR 1 Under Authoritarianism What to Expect? 1. They will come to power with a campaign based on fear, scaremongering and distorting the truth. Nevertheless, their victory will be achieved through a democratic electoral process. But beware, as this will be their argument every time you question the legitimacy of their actions. They will claim a mandate from the People to change the system. Remember - gaining power through a democratic system does not give them permission to cross legal boundaries and undermine said democracy.

Agree IF we're clear we're talking about the MAGA *power elite* and *not* everyday Republican/Trump voters, very few of whom voted for military entanglements. If we want to win over as many of those voters as we can to the task of saving and renewing democracy, it's important to be clear about this.

Democracy depends on a fearless and free press.
Corporations or ultra-wealthy individuals with many other business interests should not be allowed to control our media.
They cannot be trusted to prioritize the public’s right to know over their own financial interests.
Interesting piece calling for democracy reform and renewal in France that’s directly relevant to US. In both nations, the answer to political dysfunction and public frustration is deeper democracy and enriched citizenship, not strongman rule and ever more concentrated power. #democracy
