like they managed to monetize it enough to survive and be worth doing i guess, but the fact is that TTRPGs as a medium are really hard to monetize for a whole constellation of reasons and most parallels to what they are and how they work in video games, etc. just went extinct.

TTRPGs are largely an instruction set for making your own games and even the smallest step WotC ever took in that direction (like shifting the assumption from "obviously the GM makes their own adventures" to "let's sell pregens") were met with overwhelming hostility from established players

i'm also realising that even though i've always kinda been@around fandoms, one of the reasons i've almost never been@in a fandom (and the reasons have multiplied over the years), is that i never react well to: that. i can't sit down and keke with people who think they get to say how: i should feel

a recurring thing in just@existing as a black person in certain spaces or with certain interests, is that choosing to engage is dependent on what threshold of essentially self-harm you're willing to deal with, seeing or being subjected to hate speech and dehumanisation like it doesn't mean anything

Honestly, this is something we need to analyze beyond the nerd bubble, this is a *societal* problem.

Feeling shame, feeling discomfort, for anything, at any time, that is seen as a crime equivalent to murder in basically every context.

And I think, especially, nerds are the worst about this sort of thing, the most self-conscious, insecure and hostile.
