Calling it "gamified conversation" gets at something important. In a conversation, the audience is the other person. In a debate, the interlocutor is not the audience, but the competition, and the audience is is external to the interaction. We need more conversation, and less debate.

My completely unpleasant take is that you cannot make a career of inciting others to violence and normalizing using politics as a motive for violence and expect a good outcome. There has been a decade of sewing. And the reaping is of a bitter bloody harvest. My condolences to the children.
