After reading a really excellent book yesterday I am now reading a really terrible one, but at least I get to play the fun game of watching the citations to figure out if my own work will be a) ignored or b) denounced. We'll find out!

The arcade on the edge of the Stanford quad. The Romanesque arches recede from the viewer and at about the vanishing point is the arch with the wooden brace mentioned in the post.

In this 1991 photo of the arcade bordering the Stanford quad, you can just see, in the very back, one of the arches braced with a wooden form, painted orange—pending permanent repairs after the Loma Prieta quake. I've been trying to find a better photo of these wooden forms. Does anyone have one?

Will watch. (I very much enjoyed TURBULENCE, which I gather this is not based on, but tells much the same story)

One thing to understand is that jackasses like me graduated from law school basically believing that, while nothing like <all this> was realistic in our lifetimes, if it did happen, then our Supreme Court with all its flaws would respond roughly like this judge did, maybe 9-0.

A more generous crop of that article would show it saying that Roosevelt proposed to seek "emergency legislation from Congress and amendment of the Constitution if necessary." So this (unsourced, right?) report says the president will, if there's an unfavorable opinion, use . . .
