Thinking about openness (in publishing and data) as "ethical wash" in Shannon Mattern's keynote #dh2024

The point of departure for this session is the material and digital expansion of the Index of American Design. The greatest achievement of the IAD, according to critic Louis Filler in 1952, was “the democratic shock of recognition experienced by a cross-section of Americans employed on the Project.”

Picking up on the incomplete or fragmented nature of archives, artists reflect back on the human process of translating the past into the future, or transforming physical objects into works on paper, while addressing systems of documentation and indexing.
