$500 a day fines to teachers? $500,000 a day to the union?

This is fucking insane. So much for the party of "Freedom" and "Choice" - what a bunch of asshats.

Let's be clear about what happened today.

Premier Smith introduced a bill to strip Albertans of Charter rights,

denied MLAs the opportunity to debate it and the courts the ability to scrutinize it,

and did all of this from her seat on a jet to Saudi Arabia.

I'm the next few days, it would be a mistake to:
โŒ๏ธ limit the resistance to the teachers' demands or saving public education
โŒ๏ธ make labour/workers/unions the only faces of opposition

The UCP's pre-emptive use of the notwithstanding clause is much broader than one strike or one set of rights.

YouTube video by TransAction Alberta Alberta: Protect Trans Youth, Protect the Charter.

Remember that the Alberta government plans to use the Notwithstanding Clause AGAIN this week to erase the right of trans youth to seek life-saving, evidence-based medical care.

No rights are safe when the Clause is used for political expediency.

Albertaโ€™s latest pipeline push dredges up ghosts of projects past Few are as acquainted with Canadaโ€™s graveyard of defunct oil pipelines as Alex Pourbaix, a former executive at the company behind the Keystone XL and Energy East proposals.

Having burned $3B+ AB taxpayer dollars on the aborted Keystone pipeline & tank car sh*t, the UCP is pursuing additional pipeline opportunities. How many more of our taxpayer dollars need to go up in smoke while our health, education & social service systems all suffer under these ignorant rubes?

In Alberta, having an eligible mental health disorder (like depression) qualifies you for free COVID-19 vaccine. There must be at least 2 million Albertans chronically depressed by the actions of this ridiculous, bumbling and pissy government. That sounds like free shots for most of us.

Danielle Smith's justification for charging Albertans for vaccines & requiring pre-orders, is that it's saving $$ due to less waste. But is it really?

No. The answer is no. Hospitalization is expensive. We'll have more sick & dead people, AND it'll cost more. Fiscal conservatives, my ass ๐Ÿคฌ.

Alberta is forgetting the hard-won lessons of Northern Gateway If Danielle Smith wants to build another pipeline across British Columbia, she might want to spend some time actually trying to understand what makes it tick first.

Nearly a decade after Northern Gateway was killed by the courts, Alberta Conservatives like Danielle Smith still haven't bothered to learn the lessons it offered about BC's unique political and legal geography.

It's going to cost them โ€” again. #cdnpoli

e-6818 is calling to strengthen the Canada Health Act to stop provinces from privatizing health care and to force provinces to account for how and where they used health transfer money

The 14M dollars Smith has committed to a pipeline going nowhere would cover the entire cost of COVID vaccines.
Smith likes to day "saving taxpayer dollars" to justify her decision yet she never hesitate to spend huge amounts on pet projects: multiple panels, Dynalife fiasco, bloated govt, etc.

Thread. But read these words. This is on the UCP.

patients "are suffering and dying"

Could be a loved one, could be you. For no other reason except ideology. Also partly due to COVID restrictions - actions taken to save lives and keep our health care workers from being even more overwhelmed.

So rather than properly fund Alberta classrooms & support our kids, the UCP would rather waste YOUR taxpayer dollars on an ad campaign to attack teachers.

Make it make sense!

Ottawa urges Supreme Court to set limits on how provinces can override Charter | CBC News Ottawa brought forward the request in a written legal argument filed at the court on Wednesday, as part of the landmark case on Quebec's secularism law, known as Bill 21.

www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Good for PM Carney & the fed govt. With the rise of the far right, Danielle Smith, & Poilievreโ€™s threats to use the notwithstanding clause, this needs to go before the Supreme Court.
Just look to the US to see what happens when the radicals have too much power. #NeverCons

Context for non-Canadians: invoking the notwithstanding clause admits the law would otherwise be flagrantly unconstitutional. It has only previously been used by the province of Quebec (to justify single-language laws), it's like voluntarily declaring your law is an unconstitutional abomination.
