In other news, last night I had a dream in which I was being pursued by a Terminator. Metal-skeleton kind, not just Arnold in a leather jacket.

Which, in retrospect, is almost optimistic? Like "oh hey, I wonder what I'm gonna do to make Skynet want to kill me."

Reading me some "The Cataphract Oath," which is steampunk x Gundam, courtesy of @dapperdinobot.bsky.social; I've never actually read mecha before--and I am a sucker for almost everything implied by the premise.

The opening chapter gives some nods to a little known aspect of warfare I'm glad to see.

Scouting (in a troop based out of a Catholic church, no less!) was a formative experience for me as a kid. All and all quite positive.

I maintain getting cancelled was the best thing that ever happened to Firefly. Made it so you could binge the whole, super-quoteable show over the course of a weekend, just as DVD box sets were becoming a thing.

Also, getting cancelled meant Firefly never degraded to the level of, say, S6 Buffy.

The thing is, while it's certainly inspired by classic martial arts cinema, the book's technically not set in China, so I've got to be careful about vocabulary.

I mostly say this 'cause I feel weird calling a weapon a Guan-Dao in a setting without a Guan Yu. Just calling it a glaive instead.

Lately, I've been working on a sci-fi wuxia-inspired novel. Revisiting an old unfinished draft I started back during quarantine.

I PROBABLY won't title it "Peking Space Opera," but hopefully that gets the idea across? An elevator pitch that will either elicit excitement or blank stares.
