My microwave: the clock drifts so much I have to set it once a week

My ricemaker: plugged in for maybe 45 minutes 2-3 times a month, the clock on it is five minutes off after like ten years (and I don't think I ever set it in the first place)

I’m sorry, what?

I am a middle aged college professor. My mom does this every semester. And it is one of very favorite things.

Much like strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is not the basis for a system of government.

Like it's so horrible that pretty much all of our elites, across both parties, big business, and universities are mostly either pedophiles or people who won't do anything when they see a pedophile. What kind of world is that?

If you are a Californian who doesn’t think throwing more money at OpenAI is a good use of state resources (or a useful intervention for learners in a teaching focused university system), add your voice.

The amazing thing is how my kids, who I'm pretty sure have never seen an episode of Family Feud before, just picked up habits of the contestants on the show.

The encouraging teammates ("good answer!"), the holding their arms like an X when the other team is guessing. Is it something instinctual?

01.02.2026 01:22 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

The Family Feud game that we have (on Nintendo Switch) has a generic host.

I'd pay more for a game with digital Steve Harvey or Louie Anderson or Richard Dawson. Hell, I'd pay more for digital Richard Karn.

The family was playing Snipperclips and, as usual, things were getting heated.

We switched to playing Family Feud.

That did not help things.

Maybe? We have a lot of takers for intro and organic chemistries even with boring-ass names. If we can't hook them with two years of content, I'm not sure calling analytical something flashier is going to draw them in (but it's worth a try!)

Graduate courses always sound much more exciting (even if the material isn't) because the names are more descriptive as students get to specialize more.

In all honesty I think this happens because, for most chemistry departments, the majors don't have a lot of (or any) choice in classes to take, unlike other majors. Neither my undergrad, grad program, or current position have what I would call "electives" for chem undergrads.

Thinking about not just how the pieces go together but how to describe the spatial positioning of each piece is not as easy as I thought it would be.

Not only have we developed our own nomenclature to refer to specific individual blocks, but also for how they connect to other blocks.

So my youngest child (9) and I decided to do a similar thing with Lego sets that we both have yet to build. One of us will look at the instructions and describe to the other how to do the build.

I have found it to be mentally draining (either role)!

We got this game where you are a given a card with a shape made by Lego blocks and one person has to instruct how to build the shape out of the supplied blocks to their teammate who cannot see it.

It's a fun challenge.
