Banana Yoshimoto (1964- ) is famous for incorporating the “kawaii” (“lovely”, “adorable”) aesthetic into her work. Because kawaii is so strongly associated with young women, It took a long time for critics and other writers to take Yoshimoto seriously. Her work is no longer so lightly dismissed.
