One more reason to loathe genAI is that it has marred one of the internet’s purest pleasures: funny animal videos. There are so many REAL funny animal videos we could be sharing, but now I have to second guess something which might have been a reprieve in the wall of misery in case it’s a fake.

No other word has done more damage to the craft of writing in recent years than β€œcontent”. Even if you’re using the word β€œcontent” ironically, or as a cute little joke, don’t. When someone calls writing β€œcontent” they’re pissing on someone’s hard work & passion. β€œContent” is Technosatan’s henchword.

When did headlines and 'journalism' become so performative.

Huge thank you to the comedians, musicians, artists and writers who are just as mad and bewildered as the rest of us but are still doing their best to make life worth living for everyone.

Everyone's experience is different, I get that. But every moment I spent puzzling out a paragraph, or charting a character arc makes me a better writer. Take that away and I stop improving as a writer. And you aslo take away the joy in creating.

So why the hell would I ever hand over as much as a single sentence, a clause, a comma, to Gen AI??? Why would I want to turn my back on this privilege, this hard-earned joy?
I'm embarrassed when I hear writers I speak to talk about using Gen AI to help them with work. I just can't fathom it.

All I have ever wanted to be was a writer. I love writing. Sometimes it breaks my heart, it's a puzzle, it's a challenge, it's a joy, it's an uncertain career, it's beautiful, and it's the biggest privilege of my life to be able to earn my living as a writer. I've worked hard as hell for this.

The original Far Side Cow Tools Cartoon by Gary Larson. A cow stands on its hind legs behind a table, staring blankly at the viewer from behind its heavy brow ridge. On the table are four crudely made tools: a lump, a lump with an offset crooked handle, a long stick with hooked prongs at the end, and a crude handsaw with irregular teeth. In the background a barn sits on a hill. Caption reads, "Cow tools."

A portion of every dollar spent on Harry Potter merchandise goes to anti-transgender campaigns.

Huh. I wonder if this is somehow relevant in today's world. If, in fact, we are on the precipice of some bubble bursting. AI can't quite put my finger on what, though.

It's masterful stuff, isn't it? Really just a creator at the top of their game, telling a story with notable confidence.
And wow, the quality of the anime! Incredible. Might be just about to rewatch it before the film later this month ...

One of the best comics of the past ten years, at the very least. Starts fun but just keeps on revealing more layers and depth as it goes on. Utterly brilliant and worth the shelf space (although on that note I really feel your pain.)

No other comic has ever had the consistent continuity that Dredd has. 45 years, real time, without a reset or reboot or anything of the sort. One of the reasons its stories can carry such weight.
