Here I argue the Home Secretary's case that Palestine Action is concerned in terrorism is lacking in evidence, and proscribing the group is disproportionate. It will criminalise a significant proportion of civil society and be counterproductive for maintaining safety.

eventually politicians need to start advocating for criminal and civil penalties for people involved in fabricating stories to get citizens incarcerated.

or, put another way: a society that would like to keep functioning has to discourage baldfaced lying, especially by authorities

Bari Weiss Takes Her Grift Mainstream Journalism's biggest fraud takes the reins at CBS

I wrote about the ascendance of Bari Weiss from a hack columnist to media royalty, and what it means for the future of CBS News.

This is to me the most baffling aspect. Who would place a bet that the next three years won't feature some terrible horror in the US from the outfit that Badenoch and Jenrick specifically say they want to copy? bsky.app/profile/smka...

Pretty incredible own goal by liberal institutions and many Democratic electeds to crush the exact type of protests in 2024 that would’ve been the most effective way to slow or stop ICE incursions into American cities in 2025

Israel accused of detaining Greta Thunberg in infested cell and making her hold flags Activist tells Swedish officials she has been subjected to harsh treatment, including insufficient food and water

β€œβ€œThey dragged little Greta [Thunberg] by her hair before our eyes, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag. They did everything imaginable to her, as a warning to others,” the Turkish activist ErsinΓ‡elik, a participant in the Sumud flotilla, told Anadolu news agency.”+

But it’s a shame he doesn’t go further. Even if a Democrat wins the 2028, ICE will remain as an anti-democratic paramilitary organization. Abolish it.

I’m glad Murphy is saying what should be obvious to all Democratic politicians: you should not choose to support arms of authoritarian state that will be used to repress you in the future

The reification of β€œcartels” long predates Trump. Easier for prosecutors to paint drug smugglers as members of dangerous organizations rather than nodes in a complex network. But his innovation is trying to complain we’re at war with the cartels, even though they basically never attack the US.

Trump memo says US in β€˜non-international armed conflict’ with cartels Memo reported by US media shows Trump justification for strikes on alleged drug smugglers experts say likely illegal.

Drug β€œcartels” are not cartels at all. They do not collude to set prices. They’re usually barely organizations. More loose networks of collaborators in a complex supply chain. The whole thing is ridiculous, but Trump is basically creating an enemy out of thin air. www.aljazeera.com/amp/news/202...

Israel has just arrested Greta Thunberg and many others.

Statement from the Global Sumud Flotilla:

β€œPeople of conscience have been abducted. The flotilla broke no laws. What is illegal is Israel’s genocide, Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza, and Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon.”

The endgame for all of this is constructing a military that will obey orders when ordered to fire on citizens. That's the throughline to half of what Trump is doing.

Student visas crackdown and new levies to cause β€˜Β£1.8bn loss’ to UK economy The Government has proposed a 6 per cent tax on international student tuition fees and a reduction in graduate visas

I am genuinely baffled and distressed as to why the UK government is intent on destroying UK's genuinely world-leading universities, who bring Β£265 billion into the economy and support more than 250,000 jobs.

This tax will kill us.

Putin, an autocrat, passed a Foreign Agents law in 2012.

Orban, an autocrat, uses investigations, tax audits, regulations, and new laws to harass civil organizations in name of sovereignty.

Both sought to intimidate civil society, so that no independent or opposing voices remained.

WOW. The lead plaintiff is a Latino man who's been here legally for 24 years. He was grabbed off the street by plainclothes federal agents who didn't even ASK about his status.

He was detained overnight and only released once a supervisor realized he had been illegally arrested.

What’s wrong with the American university is not some culture of victimhood, it is declining access and increasing costs for students, and consultants pushing AI and other edutech.

Also in some universities they are firing faculty for protected speech

ICE Is Deporting People to Africa on Nearly Un-Trackable Military Flights Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is deporting people to African countries like Ghana on military flights that are nearly un-trackable.

It’s likely that this happened to them, in which case, again, this should be much bigger news. We can’t just disappear thousands of people without notifying anyone

Hundreds of Alligator Alcatraz detainees drop off the grid after leaving site As of the end of August, the whereabouts of two-thirds of more than 1,800 men detained at Alligator Alcatraz during the month of July could not be determined by the Miami Herald.

More than 1800 detainees are missing after the closure of Alligator Alcatraz. Their families and lawyers can’t find them and they’ve vanished from the ICE database. Feels like this should be a much bigger story www.miamiherald.com/news/local/i...
