A dad on a bike with two young daughters riding on the back

I actively avoid calling people on bikes โ€œcyclists.โ€ It fuels an โ€œotheringโ€ or โ€œus vs them,โ€ and makes it easier to claim that safe infrastructure is for a small in-group. None of which is helpful.

It may take more characters in a post, but I just say people on bikes. Because thatโ€™s what they are.

UK children face barriers to outdoor play due to poor planning, says study โ€˜Fragmentedโ€™ policies leading councils to prioritise approval of housebuilding over parks, researchers find

โ€œCompared to their parentsโ€™ generation, the amount of time todayโ€™s children play outside has declined by 50%. But this downward trend doesnโ€™t have to be inevitable. Thoughtful planning, which listens to the voices of children and young people, can produceโ€ฆ environments where children can developโ€

"Sustrans" as a name for this cycling/walking org has been in existence for 42 years, so changing to a word salad is quite a bold move. Some have said it's because of the "trans" bit. Possibly, but because charities are not subject to FOI requests it's likely unprovable.

Some say it could not be done.
Some say they don't exist and are mythical.
A figment of transport activists fevered dreams perhaps.

Nope, a toucan across a busy dual carriageway that changes within a few seconds of pressing the button is real.
ALL crossings should be like this one.

Are log burners bad for the environment? Here's how log burners increase CO2 levels and produce high levels of toxic air pollution โ€“ with immediate health risks.

"Thereโ€™s no such thing as an eco-friendly log burner...Even if you plant more trees, they wonโ€™t reach maturity for at least 10 years, and usually 40 or more โ€“ and until they do, theyโ€™ll barely absorb any CO2 from the atmosphere." Thanks @joshjackman.bsky.social. #WoodBurning #AirPollution

Mum 'traumatised' after dog walker pushes her in canal as she cycled to work Greater Manchester Police are investigating after the incident near Manchester city centre

A mum was pushed into a canal by a man walking his dog as she cycled to work.

This didnโ€™t happen in a vacuum; itโ€™s the result of years of anti-cyclist messaging that treats people on bikes as fair game.

We say we want more people to cycle, but ignore what itโ€™s like for the people already doing it.

Van driver who "engaged with phone" for 10 seconds before killing time trial cyclist cleared of causing death by dangerous driving Shayne Hill has already admitted a lesser charge of causing death by careless driving and will be sentenced in the autumn over the death of cyclist who was taking part in an organised time trial event...

Simply staggering that phone use whilst driving resulting in the death of an innocent person is so accepted that it's just careless.
Would any jurors be happy if the victim was one of their family?

I'm closer to the start of the roadworks here. There is no diversion for cyclists or pedestrians and no temporary dropped kerb. I need to bump down. Road workers can be seen in the coned off area.

So how is the new cycle lane doing on Auchenhowie Road, East Dunbartonshire? Well, this is what I came across this morning... (Apologies for the raindrop on the lens!) @cllrlynda.bsky.social

Yes no diversion for cyclists and pedestrians, and no temporary dropped kerb. It gets worse though...

So I wrote to East Dunbartonshire council pointing out that these roadworks have blocked off the pavement & cycle lane without warning and that there is absolutely no safe diversion in place. To walk past you have to walk on the live lane, their response? 'Planned work over the next 3 - 6 months.'

The effect of battery-electric vehicle ownership on transport demand and substitution between modes Transport decarbonization is a key part of moves to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. A major component of this involves shifting private car usโ€ฆ

This paper looks important, on Norway's EV subsidies

"BEV ownership leads to an overall increase in car trip demand in the order of 10โ€“20%. This reflects shifts from ICEV to BEV use, but also sizeable shifts away from public transport use, cycling and walking"

Norwayโ€™s EV boom shows what happens when driving feels free | ETA A new study from Norway reveals that electric car ownership increases overall driving - shifting trips away from walking, cycling and public transport. What does this mean for transport policy?

Road pricing is the answer to many things - not least the fact that EVs shift trips away from walking, cycling and public transport.

The problem is that none of the major UK political parties seem to want it
