Worcester City Council will set out a recommendation and options to Members next week, whether to continue with the Conservation Advisory Committee, or whether to move to a Design Review Service. The recommendation seeks to approve that a Design Review Service is set up next year.

A very positive step forward in the campaign for better shopfront design standards in Worcester. A lot of positive ideas and principles within the draft SPD and one that is welcomed for public consultation. This should be approved next Monday.

I’d be inclined to believe it can be retained. And without this evidence, how can anyone come to an informed decision on its future? This is the basis of our objection. We’ll keep you posted on this one, friends.

And – call me an old cynic. Go on. I won’t mind. But an application prepared and submitted without clear evidence of its ‘alleged’ deterioration and no information on the costs associated with repairing the building?

“A façade that is unique along The Foregate and much of the city” – not my words, the words of the applicant’s heritage consultant who wrote their own heritage statement. Why then – you’d rightly ask – would someone look to remove it?

The Council’s agreed to add all the new settlements to the retail hierarchy through modifications. However, Worcestershire Parkway will be on the same tier as Droitwich, Malvern and Pershore. We think this is risky given its proximity to Worcester. We will push back for it to be scaled down.

We remain worried about the potential for an exodus of key anchor tenants of the High Street leaving for Worcestershire Parkway in the future. That is why in February we wrote hearing statements to the SWDPR examination, requesting that no retail development of such a scale can compete with the City

We saw this on Facebook. One to watch. Permitted development would only allow changes at ground floor level. We’ll await if a planning application is made for this one. Sadly, not within the Tything Conservation Area.

A partial success, but we aren’t done yet. We’re grateful to Officers taking swift action to remove the vinyl window stickers and the led strip lights. However, we want the Council to go further, ideally designating the whole of the City Centre as an “area of special control”.

Along with others such as Sight Concern, we’ve been able to ensure all 5 proposed digital billboards by JCDecaux have been refused by Officers. We do not need unnecessary clutter in our High Street 💚
